Common Man Coffee Roasters Joo Chiat is the popular specialty coffee roaster’s new outpost in the East. The new cafe at the junction of Joo Chiat Road and Joo Chiat Lane has become a hot spot for good coffee and all-day brunch as soon as it opened for business.
Five Senses Coffee Australia and Spa Esprit Group of Singapore came together to set up Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR) in 2013 to promote specialty coffee in the region. CMCR now has an academy, a roastery and a successful wholesale business that covers Singapore, Malaysia and China. Common Man Coffee Roasters in Martin Road, conceived as a cafe to showcase specialty coffee, has become one of the most popular cafes in Singapore. When Common Man Stan opened in the CBD it also drew in the crowd.
New Common Man Coffee Roasters Joo Chiat
The new CMCR Joo Chiat opened in June 201, when dining-in was not permitted in Singapore. As soon as it could receive guests on 21 June 2021, the place started to fill up. We visited the new cafe on a weekday morning around 10.30 am and almost every table was taken up.
Occupying two ground floor units of old shophouses, Common Man Coffee Roasters Joo Chiat has understated and charming interior decorations. Large glass windows let in plenty of natural light.
Sitting inside the cafe you can easily forget that you are in the part of Joo Chiat dotted by bars which you will not want to bring your mother to. People sit happily at the windows of CMCR Joo Chiat as if they are looking out to Brunswick Street of Melbourne instead of looking at Hotel 81 across Joo Chiat Lane
There is an eclectic mix of seating arrangements in the cafe – from lounge chairs to high bar stools.
CMCR Joo Chiat Menu
CMCR Joo Chiat opens early and serves breakfast all day. Lunch items are available from 10 am.
Besides items on the menu, there are also cakes, pastries and cookies available.
Brunch at CMCR Joo Chiat
We visited CMCR Joo Chiat on a recent weekday for brunch. Our first impression was a good one. The staff were friendly and welcoming. There was a bottle of water on the table. A waiting staff would come by to pour water for us and to take our orders.
We ordered the Common Man Full Breakfast ($29), a Matcha Croissant ($5.50), Long Black ($5) and Flat White ($6).
It is not cheap but the Common Man Full Breakfast is the full works. You get eggs, sausage, bacon beans, mushrooms, hash brown, bread and more. Everything in substantial portion size. Two persons can easily share the dish for breakfast. Even for lunch, it is probably more than enough for a person with average appetite.
The wholemeal toast was average. Otherwise we enjoyed every item of our very big breakfast. The chorizo baked beans were particularly good.
The Matcha Croissant was a regular croissant with matcha paste filling and topped with lots of almond flakes. The filling was sweet, but not excessively so, and had a slight bitter aftertaste. It went well with hot coffee.
Needless to say, the coffee at Common Man Coffee Roasters Joo Chiat was very good.
Good Cafe for Breakfast & Brunch
Popular Japanese Bakery, Kamone, has just opened up a few doors away from CMCR. The new cafe and bakery are bringing life and buzz in the day to the part of Joo Chiat more known for nocturnal activities.
We like CMCR Joo Chiat for its nice atmosphere, friendly service and good coffee. The food is nice too. It is a very good place to go to for breakfast or brunch.
