Thus Coffee is a popular cafe in the Sembawang Hills Estate, a mostly residential area near Upper Thomson/Yio Chu Kang Road. Smooth coffee, consistently good cafe food and the laid back suburban vibes of the neighbourhood are what attracts the diners to this cafe.
Thus Coffee Location
Clustered around the Jalan Leban area is a group of shops and restaurants. Thus Coffee, the Sembawang Hills Food Centre and Hakka restaurant, Plum Village are located here. This location of Thus Coffee may not be ideal if travelling by MRT. The nearest MRT stations are Mayflower and Yio Chu Kang, but they are quite a walk away. The best way to get there is by bus or car.
With a simple decor featuring a light industrial design with exposed pipes, electrical and air-conditioning hardware, Thus Coffee’s cafe layout out is similar to those of many other cafes. The long service counter displays an assortment of cakes and an impressive espresso coffee machine.
The Menu
Here are pictures of some portions of the Thus Coffee menu. Most of the food groups are rather predictable – sandwiches, pasta etc. The stew section of the menu is more unusual. We selected the grilled cheese sandwich ($16) seafood puttanesca ($22), sweet potato fries ($10) and coffee.
What We Ate
Here is a bird’s eye view of what we ate for lunch at Thus Coffee.
We chose the seafood puttanesca because it was something we had not tried before. We found out later from Wikipedia that, ” Because”puttana” means roughly “whore” or “prostitute” and puttanesca is an adjective derived from that word, there is a theory that the dish was invented in one of many bordellos in the Naples working-class neighbourhood of Quartieri Spagnoli.” It is a tomato-based sauce made with olive oil, olives, anchovies, chili peppers, capers, and garlic. The dish itself was not as exciting as its name. It was a nice seafood pasta dish with a mildly spicy tomato sauce with fair portion of prawns and scallops.
The sweet potato fries were very good. The simple addition of some herbs to the fries made such a big difference. It is the type of food that is hard to stop eating once you get started.
We also liked the grilled cheese sandwich made with Gruyère, cheddar and Emmental cheeses. The different cheeses contributed to a layered stretchiness of the cheese filling in the sandwich. This went very well with the coffee.
The level of coffee in Singapore is rather high these days and the one at this cafe in Upper Thomson was smooth and fragrant. This is the kind of coffee we like – without any strong hint of sourness. Service at the Thus was friendly and efficient.
