Surrey Hills Ion Orchard is the Australian grocer’s second Singapore outlet. Unlike the first one in Jurong, the Orchard Road outlet is mainly a cafe with a small retail section. We went there for brunch to check it out.
Where is Surrey Hills Grocer Ion Orchard Cafe?
The new Ion Orchard cafe is located on level 5 of the Orchard Road shopping mall. Level 5 is the first carpark floor above the highest level of the regular shopping zone (level 4) where you find Marmalade Pantry, Putien, Crate & Barrel and Steinway etc. From inside the mall, access can be made via lifts or the escalator up to the level 5 carpark. The escalator is probably the most convenient as it will take you close to the cafe entrance.
The Surrey Hills Grocer Jurong (opposite SAFTI), is a grocery specialising in Australian produce with an outdoor cafe. In the new Ion Orchard outlet, visitors are greeted by a small retail section. Beyond that lies the cafe which takes up most of the space. Compared to the Jurong outlet, the range of groceries is narrower. Items such as flowers, fruits, wines, cheeses and condiments are available at Ion Orchard.
Cakes and Pastries
The display cases show off an interesting array of cakes and pastries at Surrey Hills Ion Orchard.
Surrey Hills Ion Orchard Cafe
Being located on a high floor with an external facing, the Surrey Hills Cafe enjoys a tall ceiling and attractive natural lighting from Ion Orchard’s distinctive curved glass facade with triangular glass panels.
We thought that the space was nice and spacious but the table was tiny. Once the food started arriving, it was a constant struggle to fit the plates onto the table.
Surrey Hills Ion Orchard Menu
Here are pictures of some portions of the menu. We decided to try a mushroom toast ($22) from brunch section, a Tassie steak sandwich ($30) from the Chef Recommendation with a potato and avocado side add-on ($8).
Mushroom Toast
Mushroom toast was the better choice that day. The mushrooms had robust earthy flavours which combined well with the runny egg yolk. Together with the crisp sourdough, this is a classic brunch dish.
Tassie Steak Sandwich
Being in a Australian cafe, we could not resist trying the Tassie steak sandwich which was made with Tasmanian King Island sirloin. It did not look as attractive as the mushroom toast. Taste-wise it was ok but there were quite a few sinewy parts that made it hard to eat, especially as a sandwich.
The potato and avocado add-on was also in the “ok but not memorable either” category.
