Sinpopo Tangs is an attractive new cafe on level 2 of TANGS Department Store at Orchard Road. The flagship restaurant has opened several months ago, after their Katong outlet at Joo Chiat Road closed.
Sinpopo TANGS @ Orchard Road
The flagship Sinpopo outlet is large and spacious. I believe the space used to be occupied by Providore Cafe. The new Sinpopo cafe has two parts – a lounge area (pic above) which has more comfy seats for coffee and desserts and a dining area (see pictures below) which has higher tables and upright chairs for proper dining.
We must say that the place looks comfortable and inviting. It also blends very well into the Tangs department store. The scene is set for a good seamless retail and dining experience under one roof.
Cakes and Desserts
A generous spread of cakes and desserts will tempt you from the display cases. From more conventional cakes like Black Forest to more unusual ones such as Sinpopo Kueh Sarlat, this is one place where those with a sweet tooth will not be disappointed.
Sinpopo Tangs Menu
Here are pictures of some portions of the Sinpopo Tangs Menu when we were there for lunch recently in July 2023. According to their website, Sinpopo is managed by Awfully Chocolate : ” … we run a full-fledged Sinpopo Brand restaurant kitchen, where we respect the essence of not-to-be-messed-with local recipes but spruce them up to keep them relevant.”
Lunch at Sinpopo Tangs Orchard Road
Satay Ayam ($16)
The first dish to arrive was the chicken satay. The portion size was generous. These were some of the largest satay sticks we have come across in recent times. These 6 sticks could be a meal for one person. The main reservation we had with this dish was the heavy seasoning of the satay which we found to be rather salty. The satay sauce was mild, perhaps to balance the dominance of the satay.
Sinpopo Signature Nasi Lemak ($22)
Being our first visit to Sinpopo TANGS, we felt that we had to try their Signature Nasi Lemak. We were delighted when it arrived. This was the prettiest nasi lemak we have seen. The beautiful coconut rice, coloured with blue pea flower, was surrounded by 8 types of sides such as sotong hitam, beef rendang, har cheong kai, sambal prawns, sambal ikan biliis.
The rice was the best part – it looked and tasted very good. Other than the egg, achar and cashew nuts, we found the other accompanying items to be too strongly seasoned to appreciate their natural flavours.
Baked Miso Cod Hor Fun ($23)
The Cod Hor Fun is one of the dishes on the Specials portion of the menu. It was served in style, with the gravy being poured over the dish at the table. Both the pieces of cod and hor fun tasted good by themselves, but we had to minimise their contact with the gravy for the same issue as the other items. We found it to be over salty.
Pulut Hitam Cake and Teh Tarik
Dessert and tea was the most smooth going part of our lunch at the new Sinpopo TANGS cafe. The slice of pulut hitam cake performed as expected – soft and light with a topping of pulut hitam. Teh terik was very good. The fragrance of the tea and its robust flavour made it a good drink to go with the cake. Service at Sinpopo was good – friendly, professional and attentive. This would be a perfect place to stop for a drink and snack while busy shopping at TANGS department store.
