Gaddi’s Restaurant in the Peninsula Hotel Hong Kong can surely be regarded as a Hong Kong culinary institution. Opened in 1953, it is Hong Kong’s first ever fine dining restaurant. It was named after a former general manager of the hotel, Leo Gaddi. The Peninsula HK seems to have a tradition of naming their restaurants after their general manager. Felix, the modern restaurant on level 28 was also named after a former GM.
Gaddi’s Peninsula Hong Kong
Befitting its status of the grand restaurant of a prestigious hotel like Peninsula Hotel, Gaddi’s is fully decked out in plush carpeting, opulent chandeliers and crisp white table cloths. We particularly like the spaciousness – with tables set far apart from each other. This description on its website best describes the place: “… since 1953, Gaddi’s has continually enticed diners with its superb, Michelin-starred French gastronomy and timeless glamour. “
It you are planning to dine here as a couple, we think the best tables are those on the elevated level. These peripheral tables on a mezzanine level provide a good view of the timeless glamour.
Gaddi’s Restaurant Menu
A few menus are available for lunch at Gaddi’s restaurant including the a la carte menu and a 6 course degustation menu that costs HK$2,488. We chose the 4 course lunch menu (HK$888 per person).
Gaddi’s Restaurant Wine List
It goes without saying that there is an adequate selection of wines to add to the enjoyment of Michelin-starred French gastronomy. Here are pictures of a couple of pages from the Gaddi’s Restaurant wine list. We selected a bottle of French white wine from the Loire Valley.
Bread and Snack
A generous selection of bread and snacks were offered before the three course meal was served.
Everything from the bread box was lovely. The large round sourdough bun (picture below, left) was the best. Rather than thick hard crust that sometimes make such bread hard to tackle. The one at Gaddi’s was thin and easily broken.
Starters
Our choices of starters were foie gras terrine and pan-seared Hokkaido scallops.
Both the starters were enjoyable. The foie gras terrine was light, with just the right about of liver flavour. Hokkaido scallops are always a safe choice at restaurants. Fresh tasting and with a springy texture – flavoured perfectly with the shrimp consommé.
Gaddi’s Restaurant Lunch – Main Courses
Our choices of main courses were Patagonian toothfish and French Coast cod fish. Other than wishing that the portions were larger, both dishes met our high expectations.
Cheese, Dessert and Coffee
A selection of cheeses and hazelnut liquor soufflé brought our lunch at Gaddi’s restaurant to a satisfying end. It was quite a light lunch, which is strategic as it takes up less time and frees up tummy space to try popular HK food delights in the non-peak mid afternoon time.
We were happy to see that coffee was included in the lunch at Gaddi’s. Sometimes, fancy restaurants charge exorbitant prices for coffee.
Some petite fours to ensure we leave the restaurant on a sweet note. Which we did.
