Five Guys Singapore Ion Orchard – Simple Restaurant, Complex Burgers

Five Guys Singapore Ion Orchard is one of the two Five Guys burger outlets in Singapore. The other one is in Plaza Singapura. The Ion Orchard outlet at level B3 is spacious with their signature retro fast food restaurant look – hard wooden furniture with red and white wall tiles.

According to Wikipedia, Five Guys first opened in 1986 in Arlington County, Virginia. Since then it has expanded to 1,700 locations across more than 20 countries. The first Five Guys Singapore outlet opened in 2019 at Plaza Singapura. It was reported that there was a long queue on opening day when more than 1,000 burgers were sold. (ST Dec 16 2019).

Five Guys Ion Singapore is situated on level B3, a somewhat quieter area of the Orchard Road Mall. In fact this is a reason why we like this restaurant as it is not as congested as those in B4, which is a floor dedicated to casual restaurants. In addition, Common Man Roasters Ion Orchard has recently opened next to Five Guys. Nice coffee after burgers is a good combination.

Ordering food at Five Guys is done the old fashioned way – over the counter with a human cashier. This matches the retro styling of the restaurant. This is another appeal of this burger joint. Our visits have mostly been during off peak hours. Also, as the prices are higher than the typical fast food places, we find Five Guys less crowded than other fast food restaurants. Service is friendly. Even with the low traffic, the food takes some time (estimate 15 to 20 minutes) to prepare. We wait at the table until our order is ready.

Five Guys Singapore Menu

This is a picture of the Five Guys Singapore Menu display. Three types of food – burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches are available. Another thing that makes us return to Five Guys is the customisable options for the burger. About 15 types of toppings and sauces are available. A short cut way to order the toppings is to specify “all the way” and then list the exceptions. The cheeseburger at Five Guys are quite large. On a day when we are not so hungry, two of us can share one burger. Their option of cutting the burger in half is very useful for those intending to share a burger.

No Freezers at Five Guys

All the burgers at Five Guys are said to be made with fresh, hand-formed beef patties. According to their website : “only hand-formed burgers cooked to perfection on a grill along with fresh-cut fries cooked in pure peanut oil. There are no freezers in Five Guys locations, just coolers.”

Five Guys Singapore : Little Bacon Burger and Cheeseburger

At Five Guys Singapore, our favourite burgers are the Little Bacon Burger and Cheeseburger.

Five Guy’s Little Bacon Burger ($15.80) is not that little. Compared to the standard burgers at typical fast food chains, the LBB is quite substantial. The special ingredients for this item are strips of crispy apple-wood smoked bacon. The smoky flavour enhances the already meaty flavours of the beef patty, Together with a selection of vegetables as toppings, this makes an awesome burger.

The fries at Five Guys are made from specially selected potatoes and cooked in a prescribed manner. You can read more about how they cook the Five Guys fries in this Newsweek article. All we need to know is that they are tasty and a sizeable quantity is served. Even the “little” fries (picture below, $9.90) is more than enough for two persons.

This is the standard Five Guys cheeseburger ($17.30). It is a large burger, which is why we always take the “cut in half: option so that we can share it. The Five Guys’ burger and fries prices are higher than other fast food places in Singapore, but halving the price by sharing makes it more manageable. Cutting calories by half also make it more healthy as we have been advised to eat less red meat.
