Tien Court is a Chinese restaurant in Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore. It is an established restaurant, having been around since 1989. This is a Teochew restaurant that had been on our radar for a while but had yet to visit, until our recent visit. It was an eye opening experience.

Elegant Chinese Restaurant at Copthorne King’s Hotel
We have passed by the stretch of three hotels along Havelock Road many times but have only visited them a few times. Tien Court is located on level 2 of the hotel that used to be known simply as King’s Hotel. It stands in the middle between Miramar Hotel on one side and Furama Riverfront Singapore (formerly the Apollo Hotel) on the other.

We were most impressed the moment we arrived at the Tien Court restaurant. It has the scale and splendour of old school Chinese restaurants in major hotels. such as Shang Palace at Shangri-la Hotel Singapore. This seems like a good venue to host a grand Chinese dinner event.

Tien Court Menu
As befits a Teochew restaurant of its stature, the Tien Court menu is a comprehensive one. Menus are available online (links provided below). Here are sample pictures of the dim sum menu and a page from the set menus. For our lunch we ordered a selection of dim sum and some items from the a la carte menu.

Our Lunch at Tien Court Restaurant
Dim Sum Items
These were our four dim sum items.

The Teochew steamed crystal dumpling (picture above) was very good. The skin was thin and translucent and the fillings were distinctively Teochew with crunchy ingredients such as dried shrimp and preserved radish (cai poh). Passing the dim sum test effortlessly was the classic dim sum staple – steamed barbecued pork bun (char siew bao, $7.80). The thick fluffy skin coupled with tasty char siew was a winning combination.

The other two items were more unusual dim sim dishes at restaurants.

Deep-fried sesame ball with purple sweet potato (picture above, $7.8) was a dim sim dish we have not encountered before. Encrusted with sesame seeds that provided fragrance, the fried balls were filled with a generous amount of purple sweet potato paste. This could be a dessert item as a less sweet and less oily replacement for the usual yam paste (orh nee).

We have always enjoyed the traditional Teochew kueh such as the chive dumplings (koo chye kueh), but never in a proper Chinese restaurant. Pan-fried Teochew chai kueh with chive and shrimp (picture above, $7.80) was a good Teochew dim sum to have among the mostly Cantonese varieties.
Duck, Fish and Prawns

Another classic dish to try at Teochew restaurants is the braised duck. Tien Court Restaurant’s braised Silver Hill Irish duck ($26) had more fat than the usual duck. We actually prefer the regular duck as we would rather not have so much fat. But the benefit is a smooth texture.

The steamed cod fish (picture above, $28) was our least favourite dish while the stir-fried prawns with mayonaise and crispy rice ($28) was our favourite dish. The latter had big fresh prawns cooked with a coat of crispy rice. The combination was a successful one.

Service was friendly and helpful at this restaurant, making our weekday lunch at Tien Court Restaurant at Copthorne King’s Hotel an enjoyable and leisurely experience.
