Tsuru Koshi Udon is a quiet spot for a simple meal of Japanese noodles at Orchard Road, Singapore. It could also be a potential alternative to Udon Shin, the current hot new udon restaurant at Takashimaya Shopping Centre if the queue there is too long.

There are many food options at Basement 2 of Takashimaya SC. Numerous food kiosks offer a wide variety for takeaway. The food court offers the usual local food options. Tucked away in the far corner of B2 is a cluster of small Japanese restaurants including Yonehachi Takashimaya, Kimukatsu and Nakajima Suisan which we have visited and written about. On this visit we had lunch at another one – an udon restaurant at Takashimaya B2. These outlets share a common dining zone but the tables are marked and reserved for specific restaurants.

Tsuru Koshi Udon Menu
Here is a picture of the Tsuru-koshi menu. In addition to the udon menu, there is also a donburi menu for those who prefer rice instead of noodles. A variety of toppings are available for each of them. On this visit we decided to try both rice and udon.

Tsuru Koshi Udon at Takashimaya SC
We chose the Tonkotsu Kakiage Udon ($13.60) for its simplicity and low cost. In the photo on the menu, the tempura kakiage is shown to be stacked on the udon, We were glad that they were served separately. This way, the deep-fried ball of vegetables and small prawns stayed dry and crisp until we were ready to dunk them into the soup. A lightly flavoured but sufficiently flavoured tonkotsu soup, smooth chewy udon and the crisp (and not oily) tempura ball combined to make this a simple noodle lunch at Orchard Road.

Ebi Tempura Moriawase ($15) was a small plate of mixed prawn and vegetable tempura served with rice and soup. It can also be ordered with different styles of udon : Kake Udon ($17.50), Tonkotsu Udon ($19) or Zaru Udon ($15.50). The tempura was good for this price. The prawns were fresh and did not have the artificial crunch of over-marinated seafood. Other than that it was quite ordinary without the udon. We will stick with the udon options on a future visit.
