Chilli Padi Rail Mall : New Peranakan Restaurant at Upper Bukit Timah

Chilli Padi Rail Mall (more formally known as Chilli Padi Tok Panjang) is a new outlet by Chilli Padi which is a well-known Peranakan restaurant in Singapore. Inspired by a recent visit to their newly renovated Joo Chiat flagship restaurant, we made a journey to the West to the new Nyonya restaurant at The Rail Mall in Upper Bukit Timah.

New Peranakan Restaurant at The Rail Mall

The Rail Mall is basically a long row of single-storey shophouses along Upper Bukit Timah Road. One end of the Mall starts near Hillview MRT station and the other (southern) end is near the iconic Upper Bukit Timah Truss Bridge over which the trains used to run between Singapore and Johor Bahru. The new Chilli Padi Tok Panjang is located right at this southern end of the Mall.

This used to be a very quiet mall in Upper Bukit Timah. Its low-rise, single storey shophouse layout means that it will not have the variety of goods and services that other regular shopping malls in Singapore have. But it has the laid back charm of a nice suburban location. There are even some free parking lots for those lucky enough to be at the right time and place.

The opening of the new Hillview MRT station nearby and the reopening of the central stretch of the Singapore Rail Corridor had possibly added more traffic to Rail Mall. The new Chilli Padi Rail Mall is situated near the entry point to the Rail Corridor. Those taking a break from the trekking will find this a convenient place for a lunch break. The shop space used to be occupied by Maison Marie Bistrot & Market some time back.

We were pleasantly surprised to see a few discounts and promotional offers at the new Chilli Padi Rail Mall. SAF personnel get to enjoy a 10% discount till 31 August 2026. This makes sense as MINDEF and CMPB are located nearby.

The new Peranakan restaurant at The Rail Mall is a beautiful place. It is larger than we expected and very clean and spacious. The only aspect which we were not fond of was the acoustics of the restaurant. With large hard surfaces, the sound levels were louder than they should be. It was not too bad as we were there on a weekday but considering the relatively few diners present we can imagine what it would be like in a peak dining situation.

Peranakan Lunch at The Rail Mall

On our first visit to Chilli Padi Rail Mall, we decided to try the chicken satay, ngoh hiang, chap chye and honey pork.

Both the jumbo chicken satay ($15 for 5 sticks) and ngoh hiang ($14) were excellent starters. The satay in particular was the best satay we have tried in recent months. Chunky thick chicken pieces, pineapple enhanced peanut sauce and the generous amount of onion and cucumber combined to made it a dish that made us want to make a we return visit.

Nyonya chap chye ($16, picture above) and honey pork ($16) are common Peranakan restaurant dishes. At Chilli Padi Rail Mall, these were expertly made and crafted with a nice balance of flavours. Together with steamed rice, these dishes combine to make a delicious Peranakan lunch.

Dessert

In addition to the dessert items such as chendol on the menu, there were also a few types of kueh available at the Chilli Padi Tok Panjang display counter. We decided to have a kueh ubi ($2) with our coffee ($2.20 and $2.40 for kopi O and kopi C respectively).

The coffee and kueh were not as outstanding as the earlier dishes of our lunch. They provided a simple and sweet end to our lunch at the new Chilli Padi Peranakan restaurant at Rail Mall.
