Chilli Padi Nonya Restaurant has long occupied a quiet corner along Joo Chiat Place. For years, it has drawn regular crowds with its simple, unpretentious charm. Recently, it closed briefly for a full refurbishment. The exterior now looks noticeably more modern, but step inside and you will find a space that feels entirely different. Fortunately, despite the fresh new look, the restaurant is still serving the same reliable, authentic Peranakan food.

New Look Chilli Padi


Diners who frequented the old establishment will immediately notice that the iconic, brightly coloured batik tablecloths (see picture above) are gone. Bright, modern light fixtures now illuminate the space, replacing the dim lighting of the past. However, the interior design does not completely abandon heritage. The restaurant retains essential Peranakan elements, most notably through the intricate heritage floor tiles.

The dining room feels spacious and comfortable, featuring a mix of large round tables for families and smaller rectangular tables for parties of two to four.

Menu Highlights
The refreshed Chilli Padi Nonya Restaurant continues to offer a comprehensive selection of classic Nyonya dishes. Prices remain reasonable. Appetisers start from $10 for items like Kueh Pai Ti. Meanwhile, substantial poultry and meat mains generally range from $17 to $27.
The menu is divided logically into starters, soups, pork, beef, poultry, seafood, and vegetables. Classic desserts like chendol provide a traditional sweet finish. The digital menu can now be accessed via mobile devices, simplifying the ordering process. Pages of the physical menu are below.









Family Dinner at Chilli Padi
We went to the restaurant for a family dinner and got to try many dishes on the menu.

Our meal began with the Nonya Achar ($5), which staff offered as an introductory appetiser. We would often decline these chargeable opening items, but this version proved worth the cost. The pickled vegetables retained an excellent crunch, delivering a balanced sweet and sour profile.
Meat & Fish

The classic Beef Rendang ($27) featured chunks of beef coated in a dense, deeply caramelised spice paste. The meat was well simmered and very tender. It was not overly spicy and tasted delicious.

The Honey Pork ($22) offered a sweeter alternative to the spicy dishes. The deep-fried pork strips were coated in a sticky, honey-based glaze. The meat retained its juiciness, avoiding the toughness often found in fried pork dishes.

The Honey Belachan Chicken Wings ($10) offered a unique variation by combining pungent, savoury shrimp paste with a sweet honey coating. This was another good option for those who would not like spicy food.

The Ikan Asam Pedas ($23) provided a sharp, tangy contrast to the richer meat dishes. The kitchen poached fresh fish fillets in a vibrant, spicy tamarind gravy infused with lemongrass and ginger flower. The sour profile cut through the oiliness of the meal effectively.
Chap Chye & Buah Keluak Fried Rice

We also had the quintessential Peranakan dish – Nonya Chap Chye ($18). This dish consisted of cabbage, black fungus, dried lily buds, and glass noodles stewed thoroughly in a savoury fermented red beancurd broth. It met expectations perfectly, tasting deeply comforting and well-stewed.

The standout dish of the meal was undoubtedly the Ayam Buah Keluak Fried Rice ($15). This creative main incorporated the earthy, bitter paste of the buah keluak nut directly into individual grains of rice. The kitchen serves it hot, offering a rich, umami-heavy profile that stands out from standard fried rice variants.

Desserts

To conclude, we ordered desserts including the Nonya Chendol ($4) and the Fragrant Durian Chendol ($5). Both Chendol arrived with fine shaved ice saturated with rich coconut milk and thick gula melaka syrup. The durian version included a dollop of smooth durian puree, which elevated the dessert significantly.

Overall Impression
Chilli Padi Nonya Restaurant successfully modernises its environment while still serving authentic heritage dishes with traditional flavours. The food tastes consistently good, and the service remains warm, efficient, and friendly.

This establishment offers a good option for multi-generational families looking for a comfortable, bright space for gatherings. It also suits casual diners seeking dependable Peranakan food in Joo Chiat without paying premium prices.
Accessibility remains convenient for diners. Drivers will find a public open-air carpark directly opposite the entrance, alongside roadside parking lots right outside the restaurant. Furthermore, the curbside layout allows families to alight elderly relatives safely right outside the main door.
