DYOB Salad at Cedele Star Vista : Our $13.80 Healthy Lunch

The DYOB Salad at Cedele Star Vista looked like a new feature at this familiar cafe at Buona Vista. “Design Your Own Bowl” is a salad made up of 2 bases, 4 toppings, 1 dressing and 1 protein. We had not noticed this salad bar before on previous visits and decided to have a very healthy lunch.

Affordable Healthy Lunch at Star Vista

The Cedele website has this aspirational statement: “We aspire to bring everyday feel-good moments and joyful celebrations to life through the simple pleasure of eating well.ย ” Among the many food options at Star Vista, we had somehow associated this Cedele as one of the go-to places whenever we felt the need to eat healthy. In previous visits we had tried heathy options such as their grilled chicken salad. These regular dishes costs around $20, so the new DYOB salad at Cedele Star Vista seemed to offer a more affordable healthy lunch option when all we needed was a quick lunch or for a takeaway.

Ignore the temptations of the cake counter and proceed towards the left side of the display. This is where the salad bar is situated.

The design your own bowl costs $13.80 for two bases, four toppings, one protein and a dressing. Some items may cost extra (e.g. switching the protein from the default chicken to salmon) and extra items can be added at extra costs. We found the basic $13.80 combination quite adequate.

Here is a picture of our DIY salad bowls. The one on the left attracted an extra charge of $2.50 as a result of our choice of salmon as the protein. The bowl on the right is a standard $13.80 bowl with chicken as the featured protein.

Our choice of bases for both bowls were quinoa lentil and romaine lettuce. We were happy with the choice as they tasted fresh and clean. The portions of protein (baked herb chicken above and miso salmon below) were quite small. My guesstimate – each approximately 100g. Pumpkin and endamame beans were common choices of toppings for both. The other toppings for the chicken bowl were hard boiled egg and tofu (picture above). The other toppings for the other bowl were mushrooms and shredded beetroot.

We were satisfied with both our choices. The main difference being that the chicken bowl combination was more bland tasting while the other one was more interesting in terms of flavours because of the mushrooms and beetroot. One thing we would do differently on a future visit would be to stick to the basic combination and save a few bucks. The chicken actually tasted rather nice.

There was an option to add a coffee to the salad. I think the incremental price was $4.50 or $5. The cookie ($2.20) was bought separately. The price of coffee in general at cafes these days make the salad look like a very good deal.
