Tomi Sushi Novena Square - A Complete Japanese Restaurant for Ordinary People

Tomi Sushi Novena Square Velocity is one of the older tenants in this busy shopping mall along Thomson Road. It is easy to see why this Japanese restaurant is still popular after all these years. We think it is a nice all-round Japanese restaurant for ordinary patrons like us.

Affordable Japanese Restaurant at Novena Square Velocity

Novena Square is a shopping mall that seems to be busy at all times of the day. Being on the second floor, Tomi Sushi enjoys some respite from the hustle and bustle of the ground floor and basement levels. We were there on a weekday lunch time. There was a short queue of one or two people.

There are two restaurant sections – a sushi counter which can seat about 8 diners (picture above) and the general dining hall. It is decorated simply and neatly like a family restaurant in Tokyo. Compared to two other Tomi Sushi restaurants in Singapore (Tomi Sushi Millenia Walk and Tomi Sushi Katong V), their Novena Square outlet looks like the most humble one.

We opted to be seated at the sushi counter as this area was less densely populated. The sushi items that were part of our lunch could also be served promptly and directly.

The Tomi Sushi Novena Square menu is rather extensive, covering many genres of Japanese cuisine that we are used to. Its a la carte and set lunch menus cover sushi, sashimi, grilled fish, tempura, hot pot and noodle dishes. Here are some pictures from the a la carte and set lunch menus. For special occasions there is even a Tomi Sushi Novena Square kaiseki menu that costs $100++.

For ordinary patrons dining without any special event, a simple Japanese set from the Tomi Sushi lunch menu was more than adequate.

Set Lunch at Tomi Sushi Novena Square

For our lunch at Novena Square we decided to try these items from the lunch menu : Tem Hegi lunch ($32++) and Tempura lunch ($28++). The tempura lunch set arrived as a one-tray service that contains all the lunch meal components of main course, side dish, rice, salad, soup and simple cut fruits.

The tempura lunch was a straightforward set meal with the assorted tempura being the main event. There were several large tempura prawns, one fish and a few vegetable items. The tempura was nicely done and was not oily. The batter was not as delicate as the tempura of specialist tempura restaurants, but lighter than the typical casual Japanese restaurants of Singapore shopping malls. The same could be said about the quality of the ingredients used.

Our other lunch tray was more elaborate. A tray of sushi was first served. There were five pieces of sushi which were comparable to the best from shopping mall Japanese restaurants and conveyor belt sushi places in Singapore. Of course not comparable to top sushi restaurants but good enough for an affordable weekday lunch.
