Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights Thomson Plaza is a restaurant we have walked past many times when grocery shopping at NTUC Fairprice Supermarket. Having lunch there was an idea always on our to-do list but we seemed to have always put it off. Until recently when we were there after the peak hour period and the place was nice and quiet.

Hokkien Restaurant at Thomson Plaza
Thomson Plaza is a popular location for both residents living around the area as well as office workers nearby. Being a smallish suburban mall the food choices are adequate, but not as wide as in the major malls in Singapore. We have written about Thomson Plaza restaurants such as San Ren Xing Thomson Plaza (ไธไบบ่ก), Nan Yang Dao, Wonderful Bapsang and Woodsmen. Today’s story is about our lunch at Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights Thomson Plaza.

Tun Xiang is located in a central location of the restaurant zone on level one of the mall. It has a traditional coffeeshop style layout. Nothing fancy but the generous spaces between tables is something we appreciate.

Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights Thomson Plaza Menu
The restaurant has a wide range of dishes in its menu. The dishes are typical of a casual local restaurant or a zhi char outlet. Here are some sample pictures from the menu.

Special Menus at Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights Thomson
To cater for those who simply want a quick affordable meal, there was a $10++ daytime menu at Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights. The items available on this menu include noodle and rice dishes and are available on weekdays from 1130am to 5pm.

The other special menu that was interesting to us was the set menu for two persons. Three dishes (a pork dish, a chicken dish and a veg) and two rice for $32.80 seemed reasonable and that was what we ordered.

Our Hokkien Delights Lunch at Thomson Plaza
First to be served were the two bowls of plain steamed rice and the stir fried vegetables. This was the best dish of the day. The amount of wok hei could be sensed once the plate reached the table. Some parts of the vegetables were slightly charred but most remained nicely cooked and slightly crunchy.

Next to arrive was the pork dish (Stir-Fried Iberico Pork with Green Peppers, picture above) which was quite a creative dish. But it was also our least favourite dish as we felt that the porky taste was quite noticeable. The other meat dish was much better. The sweet and sour chicken (picture below) was not extraordinary, but turned out as we expected it to be. Well-cooked with a mildly crisp surface yet moist inside and a sauce that had a good balance of sweetness and sourness. The portion size was also generous. This meal could be enough to be shared by three people.

A sign on the table thoughtfully reminded diners of the option for less salt and sugar. It was a suggestion that we readily adopted and the result of our request for less salt, oil and sweetness was a nice meal without excessive flavouring.
