Nan Yang Dao Thomson Plaza : $8.80 / $9.90 Promo Set Meal

Nan Yang Dao Thomson Plaza is one of the many outlets that this restaurant chain has in Singapore. This outlet is big and bright and seems to be attracting the brunch and early lunch crowd. The $8.80 and $9.90 set meal promotions looked rather attractive. Struck by an attack of FOMO, we also joined them.

Malaysian Delights at Thomson Plaza

According to its website, Nan Yang Dao was established in 2022 by Malaysian Chef Jackson Chu with his brothers. They specialise in dishes from Malaysia, such as Penang fried kway teow and Penang assam laksa. Chef Jackson came to Singapore about 10 years ago after working in Chinese restaurants in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. In Singapore, he had stints at the Sentosa Golf Club and Oasia Hotel, where he cooked both Asian and Western cuisines.

Other than Nan Yang Dao Thomson Plaza, there are outlets all over Singapore in locations such as Star Vista, Bugis+, Parkway Parade and Seletar Mall.

At Thomson Plaza they have taken over the space formerly occupied by Huggs Cafe. It is a large space conveniently situated on level 2 near the entrance to the NTUC Fairprice supermarket. The space is attractively furnished with cafe-style seating. A display counter houses egg tarts for sale.

Nan Yang Dao Thomson Plaza Menu

Reminiscent of Japanese restaurants, the menu is big and glossy with lots of colourful and clear pictures. Here are pictures of a few sample pages of the menu featuring Nanyang highlights such as nasi lemak, noodle dishes and side dishes such as ngoh hiang and satay. The full NYD menu is available online (link below).

In addition to the a la carte menu, there are also the promotional set meals which are available at specific times of the day, I believe that the $8.80++ meal is available Mondays to Fridays to 2pm and the $9.90++ “Super Value Lunch” is available from Mondays to Fridays from 11am to 2pm.

From the $8.80 list we decided on a Penang fried kway teow with a water chestnut juice. Separately, these items would have cost $10.50 ($7.50 + $3). From the $9.90 options we selected a Signature Nasi Lemak with chendol which would have cost $11.40 separately ($10.90 + $3.50).

Nasi Lemak and Penang Char Kway Teow Lunch at Thomson Plaza

This is a composite picture of what we ate that day. First impressions were positive as the food looked very similar to the pictures in the glossy menu.

Oily fried kway teow and two medium sized prawns were packed onto a small plate. Our main issue with this was not the portion size but this squeezy plating made it hard to eat without having precious pieces of food falling off. The taste of the CKT at Nan Yang Dao Thomson Plaza was good and it is a dish which we will order again.

In the case of the nasi lemak, there were no issues with portion size. A decent bowl of lemak rice topped with a fried egg, several pieces of fried chicken and fair amounts of achar, cucumber slices, ikan bills and peanuts complete this classic local dish. We were happy with all parts of this dish other than the chicken which seemed to have been severely cooked. Which resulted in a hard crisp exterior (which some may like) and a dry interior which we found to be tough.

Looking on the bright side, ordering the $9.90 combo gave us a chance to try the chendol which is a dish we would not normally order. It was a delightful chendol with a good balance of coconut milk and sweetness. The usual red beans and green “worms” added nice colour and texture to the dessert.
