The queue at Shake Shack Orchard, Singapore’s third Shake Shack outlet was not as bad as we feared, so we waited in line at Liat Towers to finally try the famous burgers on SG soil.
Shake Shack Orchard Singapore occupies a prime spot at street level in Liat Towers. This space was previously occupied by Overeasy, an American diner style restaurant. We had seen the long queues in pictures of Shake Shack @ Jewel’s opening and had Plan Bs in mind when we decided to go to Liat Towers. The queue was shorter than expected. At around 6.30pm on a weekday, we joined the queue. Turnover was steady and we were in the restaurant in 15 minutes.
Inside Shake Shack Orchard Road Singapore
Once inside, we were shown a table which had been designated for us. Being in a semi-basement, the place inside was quite tight. With hard surfaces, the noise level was high. Thank goodness social measures were in force and the tables were spread out. Ordering and payment were done at self-service machines. The final step was to pick a buzzer and scan its QR code to pair it to our order.
The machines have touch screens and there were quite a few personal contact points during the process. We were glad to see the automated and contactless hand wash machine (right edge of the picture below) that dispenses soap, water and paper towel in sequence. It was our next stop after we finished the ordering process.
The Burgers
This was our order – Shackburger ($9.20), SmokeShack ($10.90), Cheese Fries ($5.90) and Strawberry Shake ($6.90).
The Shackburger is the standard burger at Shake Shack. It is comfort food burger with a balanced taste of meat, cheese and vegetables. Very similar to what we tried at their Hong Kong Pacific Place outlet.
A more interesting choice of burger was the SmokeShack. This is a cheeseburger with applewood smoked bacon and chopped cherry pepper. The thinly sliced bacon added crisp texture and smokey flavours to the burger while the pepper added some heat. It is a more distinctive burger than the standard Shackburger. It was nice to try the two for a comparison. We found that the Shackburger tasted bland after the SmokeShack.
Almost as nice as the burgers at Shake Shack Orchard Singapore was the cheese fries. The crinkle cut fries were good enough but the melted cheese made them even better. I think it is worth the extra $1.50 or so for the cheese.
Overall, we thought that the new Shake Shack Orchard Singapore outlet adds a bright and buzzy spot to the Orchard Road streetscape. Some diners chose to buy takeaway to eat at the benches along the pedestrian mall, which we thought was a good idea to avoid the crowd and noise in the basement.
