We wanted afternoon tea and went to Symmetry, which has become popular in spite of its location. Jalan Kubor is not the most glamorous part of Kampong Glam. It is between MRT stations, which means quite a walk whether you stop at Bugis or Lavender; and the odds of getting a parking space nearby must be about the same as getting a ticket to the National Day Parade. Yet Symmetry, a café by day and restaurant bar by night, located at 9 Jalan Kubor is very well patronised and is renowned especially for its weekend brunch.
Symmetry’s menu is inspired by Australian casual dining culture and contemporary French cuisine; and their drinks list includes shooters, beer, cider, sake, wine & spirits. Their declare aim is to create a place “where you can walk in every single time knowing it’s going to be good and then leave feeling happier“.
The shopfront does not look anything like a cafe’s and the “Symmetry” signage is rather small and inconspicuous. It would have been easy to walk pass it without taking a second look except for the couple of huge dolls seated next to the door. Pull open the metal and louvered glass door and you will be see a narrow space which is like a curio shop – cramped, charmingly messy and cosy. The tables and chairs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
The young set of service crew was professional, efficient and cheerful. Glasses of cold water were served without asking.
We ordered coffee and a waffle ($16) to share. The cappuccino ($5.50) was expertly made right in front of us; it was thick and had a pleasant tartness with a tinge of bitterness.
The waffle came stacked, topped with berries compote and chocolate hazelnuts, with berries ice cream and Chantilly cream. A swish of peanut butter on the plate was not just aesthetically pleasing but, together with maple syrup, went very well with the waffle. The waffle was done just right and the whole combination was really very enjoyable.
Good food, friendly service and a wonderfully atmospheric setting. We can understand why Symmetry continues to draw in the crowd. Printed on the receipt is their “recipe to a happy life” – “honest food/good booze/happy tunes/wonderful time. Cheers“. Cheers indeed. Even without booze, we did leave the cafe feeling a little happier.
