Diamond Kitchen is a popular Chinese restaurant in Laguna Park, Marine Parade. Although it opened less than two years ago, it has developed a strong following and enjoys the strong patronage, especially from residents living in the East (read our review here). They have now set up another outlet at Science Park – near NUH at Kent Ridge. We had lunch there in their first week of operations.
Diamond Kitchen is on the ground floor of block 87. We believe this building was formerly known as Science Hub. In fact the road signs still carry that name and you can look out for the building in this way. It is a large restaurant in a bright and airy space.
We ordered a Sauna Prawn ($26), a Superior Stock Clam Bee Hoon ($14) and a Pumpkin Bean Curd ($14).
We ordered the sauna prawns out of curiosity. It turned to be a small pot of steamed prawns. Its uniqueness is that the bamboo steamer has a layer of stones under the prawns. The stones are supposed to enhance the taste during steaming. It has another function of keeping the prawns warm for some time on the table. The prawns were obviously of good quality – firm flesh and thick shells. We liked their bright red colour. We did not detect any difference in taste as a result of the stones but they were certainly useful in keeping the dish warm for quite a while.
The pumpkin bean curd looked really beautiful with the golden coloured pumpkin gravy. Topped with bits of seafood, it was a light and tasty dish. We certainly recommend this dish especially for any celebratory meal as the golden hue does add a touch of auspicious colour to the occasion.
The clam bee hoon is a favourite of many regular patrons of Diamond Kitchen. It is local version of linguine vongole. A generous amount of clams were used in making the dish. The seafood taste was deep and robust in the stock and also infused in the bee hoon. Those who are sensitive to seafood may have to tread carefully with this one. Those who have no issues with seafood allergies are strongly encouraged to try this dish.
We are glad that Diamond Kitchen has opened up a branch in the west side of SIngapore. The service was attentive and no corkage was charged for the first bottle of wine. We will be back!
