It is always interesting to go to the Westgate mall in Jurong East for lunch as there is such a wide selection of food outlets there. The fact that they try to outdo each other in attracting the wallets of the lunchtime crowd with set lunch deals makes the situation even more interesting. Recently, we came across what is possibly the best Westgate set lunch deal. The lunch set is available to DBS and POSB cardholders at the Crystal Jade Chinese restaurant on level 4.
For $9.80 you get a main course, a dim sum side and a drink. You can select your choice of main course from a list of 14 types of rice, congee and noodles. The choice of dim sum is more limited – only 6 are offered. You can see all the items available in the above photos. There were two of us at lunch that day and we selected the beef brisket dry noodle, the shrimp wanton dry noodle, the Teochew rice roll, pan-fried carrot cake. For drinks we selected a soya bean milk and a honey lemon drink.
WIth a zillion branches spread out all over Singapore, we go to Crystal Jade not for anything adventurous but for the familiar and reliable. The beef brisket and shrimp dumpling noodles are staple items on the menu and I believe many of us are familiar with them. These are two of our favourite noodle dishes at Crystal Jade and we were glad to see them listed in this Westgate set lunch menu. Crystal Jade manages to keep their dishes so consistent and comforting boring. The nicely stewed beef brisket was soft and flavourful and the shrimp dumplings were fresh and crunchy, as always.
The situation was not so happy with the dim sum choices. Only six varieties were offered and they did not include our favourites. We decided on something familiar (the fried carrot cake) and something we have never tried before (the Teochew glutinous rice roll). The carrot cake was fine and was its usual predictable self. The rice roll was a disappointment. Glutinous rice rolled inside an outer dough skin tastes as boring as it looks. The BBQ pork bun or the mini bolo bun would have been better choices. It does not pay to be adventurous at Crystal Jade!
With the prices of food these days, even a basic meal at the food courts would cost close to $9.80. At this price (or even at $12 which is the actual cost with taxes, service and “towel” charges but rejecting the peanuts) you can have a leisurely lunch at Crystal Jade in a beautiful setting without jostling with the crowds. Which is why we think this is the best Westgate set lunch deal available (for now). Do take note that payment has to be made with a DBS or POSB credit card.

Are the lunch set meals available on Sat? 🙂
Hi Eve, our lunch there was almost a year ago. It may no longer be available or perhaps some other deal may have taken its place. I suggest you call them first to check.
