The Takashimaya Food Fest 2015 is held at the Takashimaya Square in Ngee Ann City basement 2 from 2 July to 19 July. Our visit to the food festival right in the midst of Orchard Road mega mall was not intended. But we happened to be there and the sight of so many food stalls (we guesstimate around 50) selling diverse types of food was irresistible. We show you the food items that caught our eye.
We were there in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday, so there were not many people. The atmosphere was carnival-like and very pleasant. Many of the stalls have sampling items and the people minding the stalls were very happy to take questions. All kinds of food were being sold – raw produce, frozen food, cooked food, processed food, drinks etc. There were food from many countries, but Japanese food was the predominant one. We estimate the mix was 50% Japanese, 25% local, 15% Korean; 10% others.
Japanese snacks, crispy fish, nuts etc. The stalls, food displays and the Japanese folks who flew over for the event made the place feel like the arcade in Asakusa (near the famous temple) in Tokyo. Samples were usually available. We liked the crispy sardines and the Wasabi Squid peanuts.
Cakes and cookies – Japanese and local. So much to try, so little time.
Durian Durian – the king of fruits showed up in many forms. Makes you feel Hungry Like a Wolf?
Local Delights – some familiar, some seldom seen
Korean Pops – including a Bob Lee burger – a K version of Ramlee Burger ?
Food from the land and seas of Japan. From squids, giant crabs to melons and sweet potatoes. A large frozen crab costs $69. Melon vs Potato – which is more expensive? The correct answer is sweet potato – they cost $6+ per 100 g. The 8-inch specimen we picked up weighed 400 g and costs more than $24!
The Takashimaya food festival 2015 is very interesting and worth visiting. Most of the food are suitable to eat-as-you-shop or to take away. If we have a chance we will return to Takashimaya Square at Ngee Ann City, this time with an empty stomach!
