PAssion WaVe @ Marina Bay is the People’s Association’s newly opened community lifestyle & water sports hub along the Tanjong Rhu side of Marina Reservoir. It is referred to as a “specialist community club” and has facilities for water and land sports and activities like kayaking, bell boating and pedal boating.
Kontiki restaurant & bar is a casual diner in PAssion WaVe. The restaurant overlooks the Marina Reservoir, with a view of the Singapore Flyer and the city skyline. Kontiki restaurant serves casual American cuisine and can be a good place to go for a simple meal after a visit to the Gardens by The Bay East. It may also be a very nice romantic spot for a drink in the evening.
The new Kontiki restaurant occupies one of the prime waterfront locations in Singapore. It takes full advantage of the locale by having a large al fresco dining area. The terrace with sun deck furniture looks like a nice relaxed place for an ice cold drink in the day. In the evening, the subtle lighting transforms the terrace into an atmospheric retreat with views of lush greenery and the interesting skyline of Marina Bay.
The interior of the restaurant has a mix of the marine theme and the retro theme. It probably will not win any interior design awards but there are many interesting elements – like fishes painted on the floor, motorcycle engine as table stand and wooden table tops painted to look like over-sized cassette tapes. The dining tables are apparently old technical tables from Institutes of Technical Education. Kontiki is set up by the folks of Handlebar, the bar and restaurant right up North in Sembawang founded by bikers. It is thus no big surprise that the bar takes up a big portion of the space at Kontiki.
The menu of Kontiki restaurant is similar to Handlebar’s. Fries, ribs, steaks, burgers and other casual American cuisine with a few seafood items.
We selected the Fish & Chips ($17) and the Cheese Burger with fried egg ($14 +$2). GST and service charge were added to the bill.
The fish and chips came in a big plate and was quite a big portion. The large piece of battered fish fillet had a nice crisp crust. It was of the expected standard. The thick fries were, however, not as crispy as we liked them.
The burger came nicely presented on a wooden cutting board with fries on the side. The grilled cheese-topped beef patty looked delicious and was juicy, tender and tasty. Add the BBQ sauce and combination of flavours really excite the palate.
We were persuaded to try their special cocktail – the Passion Wave mocktail ($7). It looked nice and was a like a cross between lychee martini and mojito. It was enjoyable but we would prefer the real martini or mojito any day.
On the whole, we quite like Kontiki restaurant and bar at PAssion WaVe @ Marina Bay. It has a nice casual atmosphere and offers a good view of greenery, the water and the skyline. The staff are friendly. The food is not bad and the prices are fairly reasonable. Set at the edge of the Gardens by The Bay East, Kontiki restaurant and bar is certainly a welcome addition to the Tanjong Rhu side of the Marina Reservoir.
