We tried the set lunch at German restaurant, Brotzeit Westgate in Jurong East Singapore recently. The restaurant is located on the ground floor and is easily accessible within Westgate and also from the neighbouring Jem Mall by taking a connecting pathway. I believe many of us have seen Brotzeit at some point as they have several outlets in Singapore, mostly in prominent locations. They serve German food and have a good selection of German beers. During lunch, they have some set lunch options starting from $15++.
Brotzeit Westgate is a spacious open plan kind of restaurant. Most of it is not air-conditioned, but the single giant ceiling fan propels enough air to make the place cool enough even in the daytime, except maybe on the hottest of days. The set lunch is a two-course meal in which you select either a soup or an appetizer plus your choice of main course. Depending on the choice of the latter, the meal costs from $15 (egg noodles) to $22++ (pan seared sea bass). Here are the lunch menu and pages from the regular food and beer menus.
There were two of us at lunch and we selected one each of the soup and the starter. The soup was pumpkin soup and the starter was a ham baguette.
The pumpkin soup was nice and rich. The baguette initially looked frightening because of the abundant blob of cream. But the taste was not as heavy as it looked and the salad helped to balance the heaviness of the mayo cream. Overall the starters were not bad.
For the main course we selected the Huhnerbrust (chicken breast) ($17) and a Fleisrchpflanzer (meat patties with soft-boiled egg) ($16).
The grilled chicken breast was a good choice. The chicken had good texture and not dry. The sauce was good and the fries were very good. We would order this again.
We found the beef patties with egg to be quite bland. The minced beef was dry and the eggs were not soft enough. The yolks were almost solid. A more gooey texture would render them more appetising and provide some ‘sauce’ for the meat. The set lunch meals end with a choice of tea or coffee. We selected a English breakfast tea and a black coffee. Both were very decent drinks.
The meal per person at Brotzeit Westgate amounted to around $20 per person after taxes and service charge. The place was quite quiet on a weekday when we were there. It can be a nice quiet place to escape from the crowds at Westgate or Jem.
