家乐 Jia Le Yong Tau Foo – Ghim Moh Market

Jia Le Yong Tau Foo Ghim Moh Market - 1

家乐 Jia Le Ghim Moh Yong Tau Foo is located at stall 01-51 at the Ghim Moh market and food centre. As is the case with all the tenants that have stalls in this newly rebuilt market, it has a sparkling new signboard. The bright red shopfront is eye-catching.

The folks working at 家乐 Jia Le Yong Tau Foo operate out of a tiny space.  A counter on the left is where they make their YTF. The counter on the right holds a big pot of boiling soup with big fish balls. A small wok lies at the end of this counter, in which they cook the deep-fried items.

This YTF stall is not one of those with an open display of self-select items. The range of items available is not as wide. There are several fixed combinations that can be broadly classified in three styles – soup, deep-fried and curry. We ordered their $4 yong tau foo soup and the $6 “yuan yang” yong tau foo to take away. Here are the dishes in their plastic packaging (each portion of noodles or bee hoon costs and additional 50 cents and an extra 20 cents was charged for each takeaway container).

Here is the deep-fried YTF and bee hoon that had been released from the container onto a plate to reveal their full beauty. The yuan yang YTF looked quite similar to the Ampang yong tau foo style, but without the gravy (see, for example, our post on the Upper Thomson Ampang YTF).

Here is the final product with the sweet and chilli sauce added. The YTF at Jia Le Yong Tau Foo has a good taste. As the ingredients were mainly beancurd and vegetables stuffed with fish paste, the paste holds the key to success.  We thought that the paste was good and complex. It was probably a mix of fish and other flavours, maybe prawns and meat.  The resulting taste was very good.

We preferred the deep-fried items as the crispness provided a contrast to the soft insides. We believe the main different between the “yuan yang” dish and the others are the vegetable items – eggplant and chilli. The two eggplant sliced were thick and smooth. The chilli was actually spicy. The smaller $6 portion had more than 10 individual items, so we suspect the $8 option is probably too much for one person.
