Rhubarb Le Restaurant is a French restaurant situated in the dining oasis at Duxton Hill. The several rows of shophouses there are choc-a-bloc with restaurants and food places. Finding a restaurant here is easy, it is the parking lots that are elusive. Rhubarb Singapore is located right next to the Flor Patisserie and just across the open-air carpark. They received a one Michelin Star in the 2016 Singapore Michelin Guide.
The dining space at Rhubarb Singapore is quite small and basic. An open concept kitchen lies at the end of the space. The skylight in the middle let in some natural light that made the place less gloomy.
Menus
At lunchtime, Rhubarb Singapore serves a $45 3-course set lunch. This sounds quite reasonable for a one Michelin star French restaurant in Singapore. There is also a more expensive $78 surprise chef menu. Here are pictures of the lunch menu, the ala carte menu and a page from the wine list.
The amuse bouche was a combination of quite a few items. We were instructed to eat it all on one bite, which was not difficult considering its small size. it was a tasty start to the meal.
Starters
There were three types of starters on the set lunch menu. We were told that the Le emulsion du marche was the must-try item. We decided to try all three, but it turned out that the recommendation was correct. This mushroom soup was the plainest looking dish of the day, but within this thick beige emulsion contained a wonderful concoction of flavours.
The other two starters were more beautiful but had less personality. The heirloom tomato and burnt pomelo dish was light and refreshing.
The ballotine of duck liver received good reviews from our table, coming in a close second to the soup. The liver taste was light and well-balanced by the sweetness of apricot.
The wine list at the Rhubard Le Restaurant was certainly extensive. It is possible to find a bottle for most budgets, starting from just below $100.
Mains
We tried two of the three types of mains. The pieces of Canadian pork tenderloin were tender and juicy. The accompanying items, barley and mushroom were quite plain.
The salt cod and cauliflower dish was presented in a unique way. The white chocolate and chicken jus intertwined to form an attractive shape. The combination of different tastes was successfully done. Both main courses were very good.
Desserts
Time for desserts. The caramelised pineapple with sorbet and coconut pulp was a dessert that looked and tasted elegant.
The chocolate brownie was more mainstream. Not as impressive as the pineapple, the brownie and ice-cream was more predictable and performed to expectations. It was an enjoyable lunch as the food at Rhubarb was of a high quality. We thought that the service and the premises were fine but not at the level of the food. But at $45 for the set lunch, we cannot complain. This is good a value for money lunch.
