As we continued our search for restaurants in Girona, we found Bubbles Gastrobar and Restaurant which looked like a modest restaurant with good ratings in both TripAdvisor and The Fork restaurant reservation website. Bubbles is across the River Onyar from the Mimolet Restaurant that we wrote about yesterday. Bubbles Gastrobar is just along the left bank of the river and has a clear view of the colourful houses on the other side of River Onyar as well as a glimpse of the Girona Cathedral.
The exterior of Bubbles Gastrobar and Restaurant is very plain. The inside looks better and is cosy and comfortable.
Bubbles Gastrobar Menu
The Bubbles Gastrobar menu is quite extensive and they have a range of tasting menus. Most of their menus were available in Catalan, Spanish and English. But the one we were interested in was the most affordable one – a three course lunch (including mineral water, bread and a glass of wine) for 16€. Here are pictures of that menu (only in Catalan) as well as some pages from the a la carte menu (English).
Some small appetisers and the wines (we selected a rose and a white) started the meal going. They were small and simple snacks.
The First Courses
Things became more interesting when the first courses were served. We selected the salmorejo amb llagostins (gazpacho soup with prawns) and the mil fulles d’alberginia i mozzarel-la (baked eggplant and mozzarella cheese). The gazpacho was served in a big pot. The cold soup was nice and refreshing on a hot day. There were quite a few small prawns. Each very small but fresh and having an intense taste of the sea.
The baked eggplant reminded us of Italian lasagna or Greek moussaka without the meat. Just layers of eggplant and the stretchy mozzarella cheese. The two first courses were so different but similarly delicious.
The Second Courses
For the next course we had the filet de gallineta a la donostiarra (which I think means grilled fish garnished with garlic) and fideua de sepia i ceps (which I think means paella-style noodles with mushrooms). The fideua was quite simply prepared with only mushrooms (no seafood) as a topping. It looked and tasted somewhat like an unsweetened version of Singapore’s char kway teow!
The grilled fish and potatoes had a more Mediterranean flavour. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. Another simple but tasty dish.
The desserts were quite average in terms of both looks and taste. But overall, a very nice lunch at the Bubbles Gastrobar and Restaurant which was made even more enjoyable by the wallet friendly price of 16€ per person without any additional tax or service charge!
