Tempura Ten Ten – Tendon with giant prawns and prawn mee Japanese style

Tempura Ten Ten is a new Japanese restaurant that recently opened in the basement level of Raffles City. It is a small restaurant with a limited menu but it serves three of our favourite types of cooked Japanese food – tempura, unagi and ramen. The basement of Raffles City is a warren of food outlets waiting to be discovered.  Tempura Ten Ten lies in the deepest bowels of this place. It is near the famous and ever crowded Din Tai Fung restaurant.

The decor of Tempura Ten Ten is simple and basic.  There are a few cosy tables tucked right inside. It is an eat-and-go kind of place.

Here are some pictures of the Tempura Ten Ten menu and drinks list. Essentially there are different styles of tendon (tempura with rice), unajyu (unagi and rice) and ramen available.  We focused on the tendon and ramen at this visit and tried two of each.

The food was well presented. The ramen dishes in particular were quite pretty.

The special tendon ($13.80) was a bowl of rice with a few medium sized tempura prawns. We thought the prawns were pretty good. The batter was light and not greasy. The size of the prawns was reasonable for the price.

If our budget permits, we would gladly pay another $6 for the Premium King Prawn Tendon ($19.80). Three big prawns were served with this dish. The meat was firm and fresh. As in the case of the smaller prawns, the batter of this tempura was light and non-oily. A choice of regular or spicy sauce was provided. We opted for the latter which had quite a bit of a kick. Fortunately we asked for the sauce to be placed on the side. As long as the amount used is not excessive, we think it enhances the taste of the prawns.

Tempura Ten Ten Ramen

Tempura Ten Ten has a few types of ramen on its menu. We decided to try the Roasted Miso Ramen ($15.80) and an Ebi Miso Ramen ($16.80). The Ebi Miso Ramen was the more flavourful ramen. Quite a few pieces of prawns, sliced in half down the middle were served in this bowl of ramen. The prawns gave this dish a local prawn noodle look. The prawns were fresh and cooked just right.

The Roasted Miso Special Ramen was a good bowl of ramen but had a milder taste in comparison to the Ebi. In addition to the usual sliced pork and soft egg, there was quite a bit of vegetables in this dish. This reduced the heaviness of the dish. Tea per person cost $2 per person. All prices indicated are before GST and service charge. Service at this restaurant was friendly and efficient.
