Saboten Millenia Walk – Affordable Quality Tonkatsu

Saboten Millenia Walk is one of those Japanese restaurants we can go to when we want affordable quality tonkatsu. Saboten has mastered the technique of consistently making very good deep-fried pork cutlet for the masses. Though the popular restaurant chain founded in the neighbourhood of Shinjuku in Tokyo is best known for their breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, there are other delectable items on their menu too.

Established in Japan in 1966, Saboten has flourished into a large Tonkatsu chain with restaurants in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Canada. We first visited Saboten Singapore when the restaurant was in the dining alley of the defunct Parco Marina Bay at Millenia Walk. Saboten Millenia Walk is now located on level 2 on the Nihon Food Street.

The decor is simple and fairly typical of a contemporary casual diner.  The space is fairly compact but the place looks neat and pleasant.

Saboten Menu

Saboten Menu offers various tonkatsu sets. For those who prefer something other than pork, there are chicken and seafood on the menu. Hot pot, curry rice and sandwiches are some other items on menu. Below are photos of a few pages of Saboten Menu.

Free Flow of Cabbage

One of the highlights of dining Saboten is the free flow of shredded cabbage.

Saboten Singapore

The fresh shredded cabbage is really crisp and can be eaten with a variety of the sauces provided. There is a citrusy sauce and a nutty sesame sauce. Both are very nice.

The friendly and helpful staff will come round to the table often to offer to top up the cabbage.

Shrimp Fry Sandwich

Saboten Sandwich

We tried Saboten Shrimp Fry Sandwich ($11) which came with greens and fries. The bread was nicely toasted. The deep fried prawns were crispy with a moist and sweet inside. On the whole a simple nice sandwich dish.

Chicken Katsu Curry

We also tried the Chicken Katsu Curry Set ($18.50) which included chawanmushi and miso soup. Every item of the set was good. The rice was soft and slightly sticky and very easy to eat. The typical Japanese curry was light and with a good balance of flavours. The crispy golden brown breaded chicken fillet was delightful.

We did not have the deep-fried pork cutlet during our latest visit to Saboten. We have eaten it many times on previous visits and could say that we enjoyed Saboten deep-fried pork cutlet every single time.

Singapore Saboten

Saboten Millenia Walk is a good place for tonkatsu and it also has a collection of other dishes that are suitable for casual dining. The place is pleasant and comfortable, the service is helpful, friendly and attentive and the prices are reasonable.
