Paul Westgate is the Jurong East outlet of Paul bakery and cafe. This ground floor cafe one of the better looking eateries at the Westgate mall and has a distinct French cafe look. They seem to have made some changes to their decor and replaced their cushy chairs with more practical wooden ones, but the place has remained largely the same. On weekdays, they make it more enticing to dine there with a dinner promotion of a 40% discount on selected dishes and a $15.80 all day set menu.
These are the pictures of the Paul Westgate $15.80 all day set menu (above) and the 40% discount off a selection of menu favourites. The former is available on weekdays other than public holidays. The latter is available from 6.30 to 8.30pm on weekdays other than PH.
Here are pictures of the some pages of the Paul Westgate a la carte menu. We were there for lunch and tried the all day set menu.
For drinks we selected the “homemade iced tea”. It had a cordial drink kind of taste and did not taste like the ice tea that we make at home.
The soup of the day was tomato soup which tasted fine but was only lukewarm. The slices of baguette were cold and limp. Up till this stage things were not looking good. It was hard to get the attention of the servers even though the place was less than half full.
The vegetable quiche was a much better starter than the soup. Nicely presented, it was hot and tasted good as well.
Our moods were lifted with the arrival of the main courses. Both of them were much better than the starters and were more like the Paul that we had experienced before. The pan-fried seabass was probably not the freshest fish we had eaten but acceptable. The skin was crisp and French beans provided a good balance.
The better main was the roasted spicy chicken. The chicken was tasty and tender. Marinated with a mildly spicy sauce. This was delicious. Together with the generous portion of fries, this was a dish that can fill up even those with a big appetite.
Our meal ended with some plain-looking bread pudding. They were large servings but tasted unremarkable.
