Lunch at new Chinese restaurant Majestic Restaurant Marina One (大華)

We had lunch at the newly reopened Majestic Restaurant, Marina One. This famous Chinese restaurant (大華) used to be at the Majestic Hotel in Bukit Pasoh.  Its new location, Marina One, is a new integrated development at Marina Bay that contains residential, office and retail components. The retail portion is known as known as “The Heart” and is spread out over the podium block. On the roof of the podium block (level 4) is a spacious garden in which sits two glass structures. These glass boxes are occupied by restaurants. The new Majestic Restaurant 大華 occupies one of them. Japanese restaurant Wakanui Grill Dining occupies the other one.

The Majestic Restaurant made waves when it first opened at the Majestic Hotel more than 11 years ago. The food was highly regarded and the decor was considered modern and trend-setting. Other than its dramatic new location, the new Majestic Restaurant looks like a typical Chinese restaurant. It is quite a small place, which may explain why it is difficult to get a table sometimes.

The New Majestic Restaurant Menu

Here are pictures of some pages from the new Majestic Restaurant menu and the dim sum menu. We had a mostly dim sum lunch plus a couple of items from the main menu.

The dim sum items we had that day were pork dumplings with chives ($6.80), baked honey pork buns ($6.80), Portuguese egg tarts ($4.80), spinach dumpling with prawn and scallop, prawn and caviar ($6.80) and deep-fried yam dumplings ($6.80).

We thought that most of the dim sum items were quite ordinary. The two items that we particularly liked were the rice rolls with prawns which were coated with a rich abalone sauce (picture above, $6.80) and the deep fried yam dumplings (picture below).

The two items from the ala carte menu were pretty good. The wasabi prawns ($30) were large juicy prawns coated with a thick paste that has a mild wasabi flavour. Some of the prawns have a piece of watermelon under them. The sweetness of the melon was a nice combination wth the savoury taste. This was one of the favourites at the old Majestic Restaurant and is likely to continue as a classic in this new location.

The XO carrot cake ($15) was prepared in an omelette style. The pieces of carrot cake were smooth and soft. This is a comfort food that we can eat any day.

We had high expectations when we made reservations at the new Majestic Restaurant Marina One, based on the impact when they first opened and our previous experiences. It turned out to be a good and safe dim sum lunch, but without the innovative dining experience that we were expecting.
