Yun Nans Jewel 云海肴, Singapore Changi Airport is the first overseas outlet of Yun Nans restaurant from China. Yun Nans (云海肴) has more than 150 outlets in China and is the largest casual dining restaurant chain from Yunnan. And no prizes for guessing that they specialise in Yunnan cuisine. Among the many new restaurants, we thought that Yun Nans is one of the most interesting restaurants in Jewel Changi.

Yun Nans Jewel has a modern decor, yet serves very traditional Yunnan food. We think that this unusual combination is a successful one. A rustic Yunnan style decor might “match” the food but will be out of place in the futuristic Jewel Changi mall. We also noted that a big proportion of the diners were rather young. The nice bright interior is a major attractive factor, at least to us.

When we saw the Yun Nans Jewel menu, some memories of our visit to Kunming in Yunnan Province, China came back to mind. If you would like to see what we ate in Kunming – read our post Restaurants in Kunming and Crossing the Bridge Noodles 过桥米线 at Yunnan Nationalities Village.
Yun Nans Jewel Menu
There is a wide selection of Yunnan dishes in the Yun Nans Jewel menu. The soups, braised mushrooms and heavy meat dishes come to mind. There is also the very traditional “Cross Bridge Noodles”. There is a story behind these Yunnan rice noodles. You can read our above post to find out the story. There are too many dishes in the menu, but the 12 “must try” dishes are a good place to start. We ordered the stir-fried minced pork with Yunnan preserved vegetables ($13.9), double boiled chicken with red mushrooms and sliced beef brisket.

The sliced beef brisket is a cold starter dish that is very flavourful. The fried minced pork had bits of Yunnan preserved vegetables. I cannot identify what they were but there a mix of soft and crunchy pieces that added interesting flavours. Both these were quite strongly flavoured and so is best eaten with some steamed rice.

The highlight of the meal was the double boiled chicken soup. It was indeed very delicious and it felt like a very nutritious type of soup.
Overall, we thought that Yun Nans Jewel 云海肴 at Singapore Changi Airport is certainly a must try restaurant in Singapore. The food certainly feels authentic, based on our limited experience in Kunming. The only issue we had was the strong flavours. We were glad to have the continuing top-up of our chrysanthemum tea.
