Simple Teochew Lunch at Chui Huay Lim Singapore

It has been a while since we last ate at Chui Huay Lim Singapore, the Teochew Restaurant near Newton Circus. In part because there are more Teochew restaurant options that opened in the past few years. Perhaps because it is situated slightly out of the usual dining places. A case of out of sight and out of mind.

The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Chui Huay Lim Club. The club has a 166 year history and is a place for prominent Teochew families to meet. Named after the club, Chui Huay Lim Singapore is run by the JUMBO Group of Restaurants. Classic Teochew dishes are on the menu. The dining hall is quite large and can get quite noisy at peak periods. It was half full when we were there for a simple week day lunch.

The small cups of strong Chinese tea and the boiled peanuts gave us a traditional Teochew restaurant welcome. Here are pictures of some pages from the Chui Huay Lim Singapore Menu. We were not there for a feast or banquet that day. Just a simple meal with classic Teochew dishes.

Lunch started with two of our favourite Teochew items – braised duck with beancurd ($18, picture above) and or luak (oyster omelette, picture below). Both were good straight-forward Teochew favourites. We like the consistency at CHL. We have been there a few times and it has not disappointed us. If we need to find fault, it would be that the number of oysters was a bit too stingy.

Our final dish was a less uniquely Teochew dish. The fried noodles with seafood ($22) was a simple but well executed dish with of seafood and vegetables. There was no oh nee (yam paste) for us that day. I was supposed to be losing weight. So the three simple dishes at Chui Huay Lim Singapore was a compromise.
