Alexandra Village Roast Meat, Wanton Noodles and Avocado Juice

The Alexandra Village Food Centre is a large hawker centre that offers a wide variety of local hawker food. At a recent visit we tried the famous Alexandra Village roast meat stall Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies, wanton mee from Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle stall and avocado juice from the Huat Seng Avocado Juice stall.

Situated at the major road junction of Alexandra Road and Jalan Bukit Merah, the Alexandra Village hawker centre is a convenient place for many people who live, work or are shopping in the area. The Ikea store and Queenstown Shopping Centre are just across the road. We were there just before 12 noon. The lunch crowd had started forming but it was still a relatively peaceful place. We picked two food stalls which seem quite nice and that had a short queue of customers. That was how we ended up eating Alexandra Village roast meat rice and wanton mee.

Alexandra Village roast meat stall Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies (stall #01-20) serves their roast meat dishes with a distinctive dark gravy. It seemed fairly popular and we joined a short queue that had formed. We decided on a plate of char siew and roast duck rice ($5.50).

Here are pictures of our char siew and roast duck rice. It was not a pretty dish. The very dark sauce covered most of the food and the weathered plate had seen better days. The sauce was rich and flavourful and its strong personality overwhelmed the rest of the food. The char siew and duck struggled to make their presence felt. The duck was dry and relied on the sauce for flavour. The char siew (picture below, right) faired better as its texture and charred edges were a match for the sauce.

Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle 杜佛路佳記雲吞麵

Placed next to the dark, heavy appearance of the roast meat dish, the noodles and dumplings rom the Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle stall looked light and mild by comparison. The taste of the wanton noodles was consistent with its looks. The Alexandra Village noodles had a very light taste. Even the chilli was mild.

It was fortunate that we had such contrasting dishes for lunch. The Dover Road Kao Kee wanton noodles had a pleasant clear taste with a distinctive nostalgic feel. It brought back memories of noodles from our primary school tuckshop. The soup was like the ones for which we queued up again for re-fills. This is a stall we are likely to revisit.

Huat Seng Avocado Juice 發勝

Alexandra Village food centre is a place that is known for avocado juice. It is a available from quite a few stalls and people sipping this fruit juice out of disposable containers is a common sight in this place. We chose to buy our avocado juice from Huat Seng Avocado not because of any particular reason. It was simply because they were close to where we were seated. The juice was very good. It is not pure avocado juice. We are not sure exactly what gets into the cup. We think the milk and gula melaka are likely to have been used.
