Tenjin Raffles City – casual chic tendon restaurant

The Les Amis Group added Tenjin to its cluster of F&B outlets in the basement of Raffles City sometime last year. Located next to the popular Nam Nam, Tenjin Raffles City serves quality tempura donburi or tendon at reasonable prices.

Les Amis Raffles City

One of the most popular eateries in the basement of Raffles City is Nam Nam, the Les Amis Group’s Vietnamese restaurant for pho and banh mi. Next to Nam Nam, Tarte by Cheryl Koh draws attention with its alluring display of attractive artisanal tarts and confectioneries. The understated Tenjin is the third F&B outlet of the Les Amis cluster in Raffles City.

Tenjin Raffles City is separated from Nam Nam only by a half height wall. However, the contrast in ambience is marked. Nam Nam has a busy street-side restaurant vibe while Tenjin has a calm cosy atmosphere.

The shopfront of Tenji Raffles City is along a quiet corridor that most visitors to the mall will usually not use. The narrow walkway, light timber façade and noren, or traditional Japanese curtain at the doorway, may evoke nostalgic feeling of visits to small restaurants in the quaint alleyways of Japan.

The casual Japanese restaurant has wood furnishings and soothing colour tones. It looks like a picture in a Muji catalogue. The compact space does not feel cramped and it is easy to feel relaxed and comfortable there.

Tenjin Menu

We have written about our visit to Tenjin in Shaw Centre when it was newly opened – see Tenjin Singapore, Tempura Bowls at New Restaurant in Shaw Centre by Les Amis. Tenjin has not increased its prices but has added items to its menu.

The menu of Tenjin Raffles City lists 6 sets and a few sides and additional toppings. Here is the picture of the Tenjin menu on the digital display mounted at the shop front.

Patrons can view the menu while they are queuing up and place their order at the door just before going into the restaurant. It is a system that is simple and efficient – and it minimises points of contact; an noteworthy element in our safe distancing environment.

Lunch @ Tenjin

We had lunch in Tenjin Raffles City recently. We ordered the Special Set – Jo ($14.80) and the Tempura Moriwase Set ($24.80). Each Set was served with miso soup and salad of shredded cabbage.

The Jo rice bowl was topped with a generous number of tempura pieces including prawns, vegetables and egg. A thick sweet savoury tempura sauce was drizzled over the ingredients. An empty bowl was provided to allow the assorted tempura items to be unloaded from the tendon bowl so that we could get to the fluffy rice.

The Tempura Moriwase Set was assorted tempura served on a plate with grated daikon and a bowl of dipping sauce provided. The tempura platter included all the items found in the Jo tendon plus a few pieces of tempura fish.

The pieces of lightly battered tempura were crisp and delicious. The seafood items had clean, fresh and delicate taste.

We had an enjoyable and satisfying meal at Tenjin.

Quality Tendon & Tempura

Tenjin Raffles City is a nice Japanese restaurant in the city for good quality tendon and tempura. Tasty food in a casual chic space with friendly efficient service at reasonable prices – Tenjin manages to distinguish itself in a crowded tendon market.

Tenjin now also has delivery and takeaway service.
