Bistro Du Vin was our favourite affordable French restaurant in Singapore. But a recent set lunch may have given us cold feet about future visits.
Affordable French Restaurant in Singapore
According to the Les Amis website: “Bistro Du Vin embodies the holy trinity of what most guests are looking for – a cosy ambience, friendly staff, and good food that is value-for-money.” For years, these qualities of the restaurant had attracted us back to BDV. In particular, we liked their value for money set lunches. With a choice of two or three courses for their set lunches, BDV was the kind of place you can choose to have a French meal without breaking the bank. We were there recently.
Bistro Du Vin Set Lunch
Currently, Bistro Du Vin offers a two or three course set lunch priced at $40 and $45++ respectively. Here is a picture of the Bistro set lunch menu. We decided on three course lunches.
Starters
Our choices of starters were the red cabbage salad and the pan-seared foie gras, the latter attracting a $8 surcharge. The red cabbage salad was a plate of shredded cabbage with some slices of orange topped with olive oil dressing and some bits of nuts. It was a disappointing start to the meal.
The foie gras was better. It had depth of flavours and reminded us that we were dining in a French restaurant.
Main Courses
Our main courses were pan-roasted snapper (picture above) and roasted lamb loin with ratatouille and asparagus (picture below). The main courses were ok – they were what was described in the menu. But the presentation looked uninspiring and tasted quite average.
Desserts
Our choices of desserts were freshly made madeleines with chocolate ice cream (picture above) and chocolate peanut marble cake. The presentation of the desserts look like how we would plate our desserts at home. The madeleines were a better choice – they were light and had nice flavours.
The BDU set lunch comes with a choice of coffee or tea. It was a nice cup of coffee, which together with the madeleines were the best part of our meal.
Flashback: Affordable French Restaurant in Singapore in 2017
We could not help but look back at previous visits to reminisce about previous visits. Here are some pictures from our visit in 2017. The three course lunch then cost $35++. The price increase over the years is not unreasonable considering the inflation we are experiencing. But we felt that the Bistro we recently visited in 2022 was the not the bistro we visited in the past. You can also read about our visit in 2019.

Gosh…the food then and now…looks like the difference between heaven and earth…they need to do something with presentation and maybe even portioning also…
dessert looked like it needed zero prep
Haven’t been there for a while. so upsetting ! management needs to be aware especially with all the competition these days
