Finding the restaurant Tempura Miyashiro Tokyo was a challenge. It has no signboard and is on the ground floor of a 100-year-old building that does not look like it houses anyone inside, let alone a one-Michelin-Star tempura restaurant in Tokyo.
Finding Tempura Miyashiro Restaurant
Using Google Map in different ways, it always led us to the same place. “You have arrived”. But we were standing at a narrow lane somewhere near Nakameguro Station with no restaurant in sight. The restaurant slowly revealed itself at its opening time of 12 noon. A small van pulled up in front of this small old house and started unloading seafood supplies. Then a small door opened and someone started bringing in the white styrofoam boxes. Moments later we were invited into the restaurant.
The restaurant interior looks much better than the exterior. It is a small restaurant which has an L-shaped counter. It looks like it can seat about eight. On the day of our lunch there were a couple of empty spaces. The tempura chef and his assistant started prep work behind the counter on the supplies that had just been delivered. It was a just-in-time system straight from the supplier to the table.
Tempura Miyashiro Lunch Menu
At the time of our visit there were two lunch options: a ¥15,180 (10 piece tempura) course and a ¥25,300 course. We opted for the more affordable course. By the way, an announcement on the Tempura Miyashiror website indicates that prices will increase in December 2023.
Starters and Sashimi
Lunch started with a small appetiser and a sashimi dish.
The sashimi was made with aged tuna which had a deeper taste than usual tuna sashimi. An interesting and tasty start to our one Michelin star tempura meal in Tokyo.
Tempura Arrives
With only six customers at the counter, the chef was able to serve them comfortably. Each tempura item was prepared and served on the platter in front of us at a pace that matches our eating. Here are pictures of our tempura lunch. I cannot identify exactly all the items but will do my best.
Prawn tempura is always a highlight at tempura restaurants and this was also the case here. 2 pieces were serve, each deliberately cooked to a different degree of “doneness” for contrast.
A few other items of fish tempura followed, all coated with light batter and very fresh.
The more memorable pieces were the sea urchin sashimi served on a piece of tempura vegetable and the crab claw.
Pieces of tempura vegetables were mingled in between the seafood items. The lotus root and asparagus were the best.
Rice and Dessert
In case we were still hungry, a generous portion of tendon – rice bowl with tempura anago (sea eel) was served together with pickles and soup. In normal circumstances we would be happy to have just this for lunch.
Lunch at Tempura Miyashiro Tokyo ended with a simple dessert and a cup of matcha tea. Wonderful tempura in an unusual location. The chef spoke good English and so there was no difficulty with communications. This was our second tempura meal in Tokyo 2023.
