Tucked away in a corner of Leisure Park Kallang, Hainan Street Cafe offers a welcome respite from the usual chain cafes. This unpretentious casual diner feels like a contemporary vesrion of the old school Singapore kopitiam, a casual spot for a good cup of kopi and classic local fare.
The decor of Hainan Street Cafe at Leisure Park Kallang is simple and clean. The space is brightly lit and has an airy feel.
The cafe at Leisure Park Kallang is a self-service restaurant. To order, proceed to the counter and pay for your meal. Once your food is ready, collect it from the service point. You are expected to return your trays after you finish your meal. This system helps with efficiency, which in turn helps keep prices affordable.
Menu of Hainan Street Cafe
The menu of Hainan Street Cafe is straightforward. It has local breakfast items such as eggs and toast and a variety of sandwiches. The signature item is the Hainanese pork chop but there are other simple one dish meals like mee siam and laksa. They also have set meal options, where you can top up your main course with a hot or cold drink for a complete meal.
Below is a picture of the menu of Hainan Street Cafe.
Hainanese Pork Chop
We opted for two versions of the Hainanese pork chop – the Traditional Hainanese Pork Chop (combo meal with hot drink at 10.50) and Pork Chop with Mushroom Sauce (combo meal with hot drink at $10.80).
The Traditional Hainanese Pork Chop came with the signature sweet and sour sauce. The mushroom sauce offered a contrasting savoury and earthy flavor. Both dishes were served with potato wedges and steamed white rice. The pork chop was a good version of the Hainanese pork chop. It had a golden brown, crisp batter encasing tender meat cooked throughout. Pleasingly, it was not greasy and did not have an overpowering pork flavour.
The coffee was good – strong and robust, just like good kopitiam coffee should be. Perfect for that pick-me-up early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Laid-back spot for fuss-free meal
Overall, Hainan Street Cafe is a laid-back spot that is good for a leisurely breakfast, a simple meal, or even just a “lim kopi” break. There will be two new hubs at the Singapore Sportshub soon – Kallang Tennis Hub & Kallang Football Hub. Hainan Street Cafe is right opposite the brand new Kallang Tennis Hub, just metres away. If you’re attending a concert or sporting event at the Sports Hub, keep this cafe at Leisure Park Kallang in mind for a fuss-free and satisfying meal before or after the event.
