Rùn Restaurant Hong Kong 2 Michelin Star Cantonese Cuisine in a Chinese Tea Pavilion

Rùn Restaurant (潤), a two Michelin Star restaurant in St Regis Hong Kong, is described as ” Cantonese in a Chinese tea pavilion”. We can understand why when we arrived. The restaurant looks like it has been built in a fine wooden structure. The even lighting and tranquil atmosphere do evoke images of a Chinese tea pavilion.

Two Michelin Star Chinese Restaurant in St Regis Hong Kong

A two MICHELIN star restaurant in the HK Michelin Guide, Rùn is one of the top Cantonese fine dining restaurants in Hong Kong. The decor does look the part, with a warmly-lit central core and a brighter area on the outer peripheral. Like its sister French restaurant L’Envol on level 3 of the hotel, the atmosphere was calm and luxurious.

Rùn Restaurant Menu

There are a few menus at the Rùn Restaurant including an a la carte, dim sum menu and two lunch menu. Here are pictures of the seasonal menu, the Rùn Restaurant Business Lunch ($HK688) and Executive Lunch ($888) menus. We picked the Executive lunch.

Executive Lunch Menu

Tea and walnuts were served while we waited for the food to arrive. We enjoyed the tranquility of a week day lunch in a 5 star hotel in Wan Chai, Hong Kong.

Lunch started with the arrival of the barbecued Iberico pork with smoked bean curd sheet. Bean curd was nice while the char siew was outstanding. This was comparable to the best that we have tried in Singapore such as those served at Mott 32 (MBS) and Hua Ting (Orchard Hotel). Our only complaint was that it was so small,

Double boiled conch soup with Matsutake mushroom was next. Clear yet complex, this is how the Cantonese are known for their soups.

Quality over quantity seems to be a recurrent theme at Rùn Restaurant Hong Kong. The steamed garoupa fillet was extremely fresh but was easily polished off in two bites.

Braised whole South African abalone was the highlight of this meal. Abalone is one of the treasures at Chinese restaurants and this was a very good specimen. Cooked till soft yet with some resistance, it had a perfect texture. Made even better by the thick dark gravy.

Dessert was the least impressive part of the meal. Chilled pink guava cream and “Chinese petit fours” rounded up the meal.

It would be fair to say that this Executive lunch at Run restaurant may be most suitable for those on a diet. For others, it may be still be a good thing as they could go in search of Hong Kong roast goose (as we did).
