There are many Peranakan restaurants in Katong and Joo Chiat. But surprisingly, it was hard to find Peranakan food in Parkway Parade, the biggest mall in that area. That has now changed. With the opening of Godmama Peranakan restaurant in Parkway Parade, we can now enjoy familiar Peranakan flavours in the comfort of a mall setting.
Godmama in Parkway Parade
Godmama’s original outlet opened in Funan Mall (read about our Brunch at Godmama Funan in 2019). The new branch fills a void for shoppers seeking a taste of nyonya food in Parkway Parade. The new Godmama Peranakan Restaurant in Parkway Parade is located under the escalators in the wing leading to level 2 (a testament to the REIT manager’s efficient utilisation of rentable space). Godmama’s interior designer has done a great job creating a space with a casual elegance that makes you forget that you are siting under the escalators.
Menu of Godmama
It caters to both lunch and dinner crowds, with a dedicated lunch menu featuring set options. On weekends and public holidays, there is a brunch menu that features unique and imaginative pairings, giving a contemporary twist to classic Peranakan dishes.
Below are pictures of the menus shown to us when we went for lunch.
Lunch at Godmama Peranakan Restaurant
We opted for some classic Peranakan favourites: ngoh hiang ($11.90), nyonya chap chye ($15.90) and tau yu bak $20.90), accompanied by bunga telang jasmine rice ($1.50 per bowl).
Plating was basic, but the colour of the bunga telang (or butterfly pea flower) rice did make an impression. The portion sizes were quite generous. Each dish could easily be shared between three to four diners.
The ngoh hiang, or five-spice meat roll, lacked the expected crunch, with a slightly softer texture than what some might prefer.
The nyonya chap chye was a well braised vegetable dish. It had a good mix of textures and was tasty, though it was a tad heavy on garlic (perhaps a dish to avoid before a business meeting or a hot date).
The clear winner of the day was the tau yu bak. The soy sauce pork belly offered a delightful balance of lean and fatty portions. The meat was tender and full of savoury goodness with a hint of tartness. A braised egg, tau pok and mushroom were the other ingredients in the dish.
Overall, Godmama Peranakan Restaurant in Parkway Parade offers a pleasant dining experience. Friendly and efficient service complements the comfortable ambience. While the food was generally good, the restaurant faces stiff competition from the many very good Peranakan eateries in Joo Chiat and Katong. However, Godmama Parkway Parade offers the convenience and comfort of a mall setting.
