Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine One Holland Village (湘香湖南菜) serves Chinese food from Hunan province of China. The new outlet at Holland Village is the place to go for the Chinese cuisine known for spicy and strong flavours. Prices are quite reasonable, especially for those who decide to join as members.
Hunan Restaurant at One Holland Village
The new One Holland Village mall has certainly brought a new range of Chinese food selection to this dining enclave. Together with familiar names like Crystal Jade and Din Tai Fung, other Chinese restaurant brands have set up in the mall, such as Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine.
Xiang Xiang restaurant is a medium-sized restaurant on level two of the new Holland V mall. It has a bright, efficient layout, similar to what we see at Din Tai Fung outlets.
The rice is said to be prepared using “Premium Wuchang rice” steamed using bottled pure water. Small rice cookers are used rather than the large commercial rice-cookers we often see in restaurants. I guess making rice in small batches gives rise to fresher products for diners and better quality control.
Xiang Xiang Restaurant Membership
Diners can decide to join as Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine restaurant members. It appears that members enjoy financial savings in two ways. First, many of the items on the menu have two-tier pricing, with lower prices for members. Second, members can buy top up credits and gain free credits – e.g. top up $300 cash to get $350 credit for spending. I think this will be useful for regular customers.

We noticed two things when we saw the menu. Many of the dishes had two prices – a higher one for the public and a lower one for members. The other thing was that many of the dishes are spicy. Even the streamed seabass is topped with chopped chillies. That was not unexpected of Hunan cuisine, but it meant that we (being not very keen on hot food these days) were left with very few choices.
Non-Spicy Hunan Cuisine
Fortunately there were enough non-spicy dishes on the Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine One Holland Village Menu to get by on our first visit to this restaurant.
The steamed egg with shrimp ($11.90, picture above) was gentle and soothing. This will be a good dish to order if dining here with young kids. Similarly, you can’t go wrong with fried Romaine lettuce with garlic. I must say the vegetables were expertly fried to be sufficiently cooked yet retaining a good amount of crunch. The level of flavouring was also good.
Our carbo dish was fried vermicelli ($14.90). It looked like a small dish but contained more than enough glass noodles for two diners. This was cooked well such that the noodles absorbed the flavours of the broth that they were fried in. The downside was that it looked very plain and reminded us too much of economy bee hoon dish.
Free Snacks and Ice Cream
The young ones and the young at heart dining at Xiang Xiang will be happy to see the free snacks and ice-cream corner. This was a help yourself place.
Not quite Häagen-Dazs, but anything sweet and free is always welcome at the end of a heavy meal. These cups were our free dessert at Xiang Xiang Holland V.
