DOMO Modern Japanese restaurant at Raffles City is a posh place to have lunch. Humble diners like us have a chance to dine there thanks to the more affordable option of set lunches priced below $50.

Beautiful Japanese Restaurant in Raffles City
Describing itself as “… a new Japanese dining destination that promises to redefine flavours and elevate your culinary experience,” the new DOMO modern Japanese restaurant felt different the moment we entered the restaurant.

The restaurant has a strong, serious decor that looks expensive. Fortunately, the sombre atmosphere was balanced by a very pleasant team of smiling and helpful staff who made us feel welcome throughout the meal.

A Nice Japanese Restaurant with European Influences
In an interview with CNA, Chef Rose Ang described DOMO as a modern Japanese Restaurant with European influences. We were quite impressed when we read about her focus to make it a fun and nice place. “You can come and just have a plate of noodles, and we will welcome you as much as if you come here and spend bigger on king crabs or wagyu beefโ. Based on our experience, I think she has succeeded.

DOMO Modern Japanese Menu
The DOMO Modern Japanese Menu is an extensive one. You can view the full menu online. Here are pictures of some sample pages. The Japanese – Western combinations brought to mind Nobu Singapore at Four Seasons Hotel, which is also a posh restaurant featuring Japanese cuisine with Western influences. But the restaurants’ personalities seemed quite different.

Omakase and One for One Menu
In addition to the regular a al carte menu, diners have the option of the DOMO Omakase menu which range from $88 to $300. This is a picture of the Omakase 150.

In addition to the omakase menu, there are other menus such as 1-for-1 ala carte and set menus.

DOMO Modern Japanese Set Lunch Menu
For our quick lunch at DOMO restaurant, we ordered only from the DOMO set lunch menu and tried four of them – the executive sashimi set ($38), tempura set ($48), Kurobuta pork belly sukiyaki($38) and miso chicken robatayaki set ($49).

All the set lunches had two things in common – the opening vegetable salad (picture above) and the closing dessert of a slice of what seemed like banana cake and two blueberries. These were the least interesting parts of our lunch.

Executive Sashimi Set

A simple mixed sashimi platter with rice, chawanmushi and soup. This was the choice of our health conscious colleague. She was not disappointed as the sashimi was fresh and clean-tasting. The portion was rather small but this was not an issue for our weight-watching friend.

DOMO Kurobuta pork belly sukiyaki

The sukiyaki meal was more substantial. Also more beautifully presented, the sukiyaki hot pot had a good mix of meat and vegetables. We were glad the soup was not too sweet as some sukiyaki tends to be. Priced at $38++ we thought it was also the most value for money lunch.

Tempura Set

Tempura prawns and vegetables were featured in the tempura set. They were pretty good but not outstanding. The small sashimi side dish of salmon and scallop was very fresh.

DOMO Modern Japanese Robatayaki Miso Chicken
DOMO is also described as the “best Robatayaki In Singapore Town”. There is a robatayaki section in the set lunch menu. From this section, we chose the miso chicken. This selection also comes with the small sashimi side dish. But in this case the grilled chicken was the highlight. The well-grilled meat had enough charred bits to be smoky yet not appear carcinogenic. It gave us a glimpse into the robatayaki talents of this restaurant. This would be a dish we would order again.
