Jiak Restaurant : Affordable Modern Tze Char at Hillview

Jiak Restaurant is an impressive tze char restaurant in HillV2, a small shopping mall at Hillview Road. Many f & b outlets have changed hands but some have thrived. This restaurant is one of them. It has transformed from a basic eatery to quite a nice restaurant over the years. It was a full house at lunch time on a weekday when we were there recently.

It has been a while since we last went to ‘jiak’ at Jiak. You can compare the current decor (picture above) to the picture we took during our 2017 visit (picture below).

Knowing that HillV2 is a popular lunch place for folks working nearby because there are not many malls close by, we were there early, just before the lunch crowd. By around 12 noon, it was a full house at the restaurant (picture below),

Here are pictures from a few pages from the restaurant menu and the Jiak Weekday executive lunch options. The $12.80 set lunch options that include a main dish, rice and drink look like good value for money.

The a la carte menu has the usual tze char restaurant dishes like prawn paste chicken, various vegetables and noodles dishes. What we noticed was that they do not have premium items like crab and lobster that are usually marked “market price”. I think this is a safe place to host a meal.

The dishes that we Jiak-ed

At our simple lunch at HillV2 we ordered small portions of the following: eggplant with minced chicken ($10), Kopi-O chicken ($12), bitter gourd omelette ($9) and steamed rice ($1 each).

This is an easy review to write. All three dishes performed above expectations. Not that there was anything fancy or michelin-esque about them. But they were prepared as we would like them to be – cooked just right, no excessive salt or seasoning was detected and the portions were substantial. Sounds like these expectations are not high but we are surprised how many places have disappointed us.
