De Golden Spoon Restaurant: Tze Char in Tiong Bahru Carpark

Visiting De Golden Spoon restaurant (金匙小厨) in Tiong Bahru was quite an experience. It has a unique location. A single-storey stand-alone structure that houses the restaurant in the middle of the Seng Poh Lane open air carpark. We went there for a weekday dinner.

Tiong Bahru Tze Char Restaurant

Other than being air-conditioned, the restaurant has a no-frills approach. It looks like a Chinese restaurant from the 80s.

Initially, we thought that it was a nice quiet restaurant with a quaint retro style. But the atmosphere soon changed when the place started filling up. The outdoor (but sheltered) tables were not in demand that day as it was raining. It was a full house indoors. Many tables seem to be seated with business people with most of the diners dressed in office clothes. With such a crowd, the sound level was high, probably amplified by the hard room surfaces.

No Corkage Chinese Restaurant BYO

One positive aspect of dining at De Golden Spoon restaurant is its no corkage policy. No corkage fee BYO restaurants in Singapore are getting rare and this may also have contributed to the popularity of this restaurant.

Golden Spoon Restaurant Menu

Another positive aspect of dining at this restaurant is that their menu with prices is available online (link below). This is really useful to plan in advance for a meal. Here are pictures of some pages from the Golden Spoon restaurant menu for a quick peek.

From the menu we selected these dishes for dinner : bamboo clams ($15++ per piece), Golden Spoon crispy chicken ($16++ for half chicken), panfried coffee pork rib ($15++) and fried hor fun with deer meat ($24++).

Bamboo Clams and Chicken

Both the bamboo clams (picture above) and crispy chicken (picture below) were not bad but not memorable either. In particular we thought that the chicken could be less dry.

The coffee ribs was the best dish of the night. Not as exciting as the ribs from Keng Eng Kee, but good enough for us to want to order this again on a next visit.

The fried hor fun was served in quite a large portion. The noodles were nice – well fried with some wok hei flavour. However we felt that the deer meat or venison was a bit over-tenderised.
