Hong Kong Lung Hwa Chicken Noodles, Coffee and Dessert at Mei Ling Market & Food Centre

Hong Kong Lung Hwa Chicken Rice and Noodles has a 4.8 star Google reviews rating. It is a stall which had moved to Mei Ling Market and Food Centre from Toa Payoh. It is run by a chef with 30 years of experience in Chinese restaurants, including Hong Kongโ€™s Luk Yu Tea House. He and his wife had moved from Hong Kong. The couple now run the stall.

It has been a while since our last visit to this market and food centre. Our favourite time to visit is just before lunch time on a weekday – about 11am. This is a time when many stalls are open but the working folks have yet to come here for their lunch break.

We observed several changes to the occupants in the food centre. Some have left, new ones have moved in and quite a few seem to be vacant. Nevertheless it was good to see the evergreens such as Lao Jie Fang Beef Noodlesย and Xin Lu Teochew Fishball Noodles still there. As you can see from these pictures, the hawker centre is spacious and was peaceful. Only a few stalls have short queues of 2 or 3 people.

Chef Leung first set up shop in Toa Payoh Lorong 1 when he started business in Singapore. It was a successful stall apparently. For health reasons, he took a break and resumed business at the current location a few years ago. Toa Payoh’s loss is Queenstown’s gain. Hong Kong Lung Hwa Chicken Rice and Noodles was one of the stalls that had a queue when we were there.

The number of chicken and ducks hanging in the display was a positive sign. This was their lunch crowd forecast. We were glad to be early. Soy sauce chicken seems to outnumber the ducks. It is probably the most favoured item.

For our lunch we decided to have chicken macaroni ($3.50) and soy sauce chicken noodles ($4).

The portion size of macaroni was adequate and the amount of shredded chicken was decent. The most outstanding aspect of this dish was the soup. Not a watery soup with token flavouring, this soup was complex and flavourful. This dish would be a good choice for those recovering from illness or just seeking a simple soup lunch.

The highlight of lunch was the soy sauce chicken noodles, in particular the chicken. This bird was expertly cooked till tender and moist. Its skin soaked up the soy sauce seasoning and maintained a chewy texture. The other components were not as outstanding but deserved praise as well. In addition to cut chilli, some chilli sauce and a spoonful of condiments were tucked into corners of the plate. They were both not run of the mill sauces but added an extra layer of flavour. The noodles were thin and dry, reminding us of the crunchy style of wanton noodles of Hong Kong.

We should also say that the couple tending to the stall were some of the most gracious of hawker stall folks that we have met. It was a good experience buying food from them. We are usually skeptical of high Google ratings especially when the total sample size was not high. In this case however, we are in full agreement with the 4.8 rating.

Rong Xing Kueh Stall

It was easy to decide on what to eat after our soy sauce chicken main courses. In the immediate vicinity of the stall we noticed a snack stall and a coffee stall. Rong Xing Kueh Stall is across the aisle from Hong Kong Lung Hwa.

The stall sells common local snacks such as ang ku kueh and curry puff.

This is a list of the items available at the stall. For me, it was easier to look and point at the items we were interested in.

We purchased these two items for dessert. They were sweet and coated with coconut shavings.

Sabana Coffeehouse – Trendy Kopi at Mei Ling Market

Sabana Coffeehouse is a coffee and drinks stall two doors away from Hong Kong Lung Hwa. It was a coffee stall that caught our attention the moment we saw it. Its modern signboard and display stands out from the usual hawker centre displays.

Its neat and clean layout also looks attractive. An espresso machine and coffee bean grinder on the counter instead of boiling kettles.

For modern coffee drinkers, cafe style drinks like latte and cappuccino ($3.80) are available. More fancy drinks such as Biscoff teh peng ($3.50) and sea salt caramel latte ($4.3) were also available. They have also wisely catered for the traditionalists who prefer coffee shop drinks. More familiar and less costly coffee styles are on the menu – e.g. Kopi O ($1.20), Milo ($1.50) and teh C ($1.30). We thought that the prices were very reasonable.

We had a kopi and a honey tea to drink with our dessert. The tea was fine and the kopi was above the average kopi tiam standard of coffee.

The Ceylonese Affair at Mei Ling. An Exciting New Stall?

We end this post with the sighting of an interesting stall The Ceylonese Affair at Mei Ling Market. It was also one of the stalls that had a queue. ย Its specialty seems to be Sri Lankan briyani. We will save this for a future visit.
