We are experiencing a hot dry spell in Singapore. The sun seems brighter than normal and the dry heat is scorching. Almost like summer in Spain. The weather inspired us to search for Mediterranean food in Singapore. These days we have quite a bit of Greek and Spanish restaurant choices and we know of only one Portuguese restaurant. We ended up at the Tapas Club in Orchard Central. We have been there before but their weekday 1 for 1 tapas deal was irresistible. Unfortunately, we were told that this arrangement would end soon (I think they said 16 Mar 2018), so please call ahead if you are thinking of going. There could be other weekday offers in the pipeline.
Typhoon Cafe at Plaza Singapura is an attractive contemporary Taiwanese cafe on level 4 of the popular Orchard Road mall. It offers Instagram-worthy artisan fruit teas and desserts as well as classic Taiwanese dishes like Lu Rou Fan and Oyster Omelette. Signature dishes of Typhoon Cafe at Plaza Singapura include Australian Beef Short Rib with Wuxi Maltose Glaze and Crispy Whole Pork Knuckle with Taiwanese Chilli Jam.
It has been a while since we had lunch at Shang Palace the Chinese restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. Shangri La Hotel Singapore is located near Orchard Road but it is not really close. Perhaps it is a case of ‘out of sight out of mind’. The last time we had Shang Palace dim sum was some years ago and we thought that the (then) new dim sum chef had done a great job. We returned recently for a long overdue lunch of the Shang Palace dim sum.
The varied & exciting dining options of Plaza Singapura restaurants and food places make the shopping mall a food paradise in Orchard Road. There are many casual affordable restaurants & cafes offerring a wide variety of cuisines.
You can find kiosks selling take-aways like Korean fried chicken and British fish & chips and casual diners like Lokkee, Arteastiq, Nam Nam and Bangkok Jam, as well as Michelin-starred Hong Kong dim sum restaurant Tim Ho Wan. Local and regional cuisines are well represented. Al fresco dining, local and international coffee chains and a spiffy looking food court add to the allure of Plaza Singapura as a dining destination.
(This is a 2018 update of Plaza Singapura – a Singapore food paradise in Orchard Road).
TungLok XiHe Peking Duck Restaurant(同乐羲和), a collaboration between TungLok Group and Beijing renowned Xihe Group, serves much more than just Peking Duck. We visited their Orchard Central outlet recently and were surprised by the extensive menu covering the usual range of Chinese dishes and dim sum.
We had high expectations for the Hokkaido Marche Gourmet Hall which opened in the basement of Orchard Central recently. The high quality of produce from Hokkaido is well-known. Some people go on holiday in Hokkaido just for the food there. We have come to expect high restaurant standards in Japan such that we rarely hear of bad restaurants in Japan. And so when we learnt that the Hokkaido Marche Gourmet Hall had recently opened in Singapore with eight f & b operators from Hokkaido, it was a matter of time before we checked it out.
