Shirokiya, at the new CHIJMES Japanese food corridor, is a casual Japanese restaurant that is reputed for healthy dining. They focus on the use of traditional Japanese ingredients like shio-koji, or salted rice malt. Their menu has items that are supposed to promote beauty too – such as dishes with collagen.
The interior is nicely fitted in contemporary style with some elements of a traditional Japanese house. There is a bar at one end and a private dining area at the other.
The drinks list has a variety of shochu, umeshu, sake, frozen beer and cocktails. Highlights of their menu include marinated cold tofu, hot pot with special chicken & collagen stock, charcoal grilled Kurubuta pork and rice in hot stone bowl.
They offer a Shirokiya “Smile Lunch” at $12 nett. The set lunch allows you to choose from 12 main dishes and each set comes with tofu and a drink. Some of the main dishes also come with rice and miso soup. With a reasonable top up you can add a side dish (from $2.80 for sushi to $11 for sashimi), beer ($8) and desserts ($4.80).
We ordered the Chicken Katsu Toji set and the Negi Toro-Don set. The food was served quite promptly. The fried chicken came on a bed of fluffy scrambled egg served on a sizzling hot plate. The presentation was interesting and the dish was enjoyable.
The Negi Toro-Don looked pretty, with a layer of minced raw tuna garnished with spring onion at the top of a bowl of rice. The simple raw tuna rice bowl was well executed and delicious.
Shirokiya claims that their food can “support your health and beauty from inside of your body”. That is, of course, hard to verify. However, the Shirokiya “Smile Lunch” at $12 (no GST and no service charge added to the bill) is really good value; plus the food is quite good and you are in a nicely appointed authentic Japanese restaurant. That should bring on a smile. So maybe having lunch at Shirokiya can improve health, for it has been said that “contentment brings health“.
