Slappy Cakes – Make Your Own Panacakes @ Plaza Singapura

You can take your first step to becoming MasterChef Singapore by trying your hands at making pancakes in Slappy Cakes Plaza Singapura. A new outlet of the family friendly restaurant chain which originated from Portand, Oregon, has just opened in the popular mall in Orchard Road. The do it yourself pancake house not only lets you customise your pancakes, it lets you make your own pancakes on a tabletop griddle.

Slappy Cakes in Plaza Singapura is part of the Tung Lok Group. It is located next to Tung Lok’s Lokkee. Slappy Cakes looks bright and chirpy with its white and bright orange themed interior. Most of the tables have griddles built-in.

The special feature of Slappy Cakes is that customers can make their own pancakes at their tables. The DIY pancake menu allows you to choose the flavours of the batter – which include pandan, buttermilk, peanut butter and chocolate – and to select the toppings.

If you rather eat without having to work, there are many non-DIY items in the menu – including mains like beef sirloin and lamb shank. Below are photos of random pages of Slappy Cakes’ Menu.

DIY Panacake

We decided to have a pancake making experience and selected the Whole Grain Batter ($8.50) and picked several toppings –  Granola ($2), Lavender Homey ($3) and Blueberry ($3). The staff prepared the items ordered and brought them to the table. She then turned on the griddle. Cooking instructions were found on a sticker at the side of the griddle.

The ingredients were sufficient to make 3 regular size pancakes. It was not too difficult to follow the cooking instructions but it was not easy to cook a pancake of the ideal size and thickness.  As you can see from the photos below, it was hard to make the pancakes look round and picture perfect.

Country Chicken Set

We also ordered a Country Chicken Set ($14) which came with soup and a cold drink.

Slappy Cakes’ country fried chicken dish was quite a pleasant surprise. The chicken was served with scrambled eggs, salad, potatoes and toast. The portion was quite substantial. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and the fried chicken was delicious with a  flavourful and crispy outside.

Slappy Cakes is an interesting make-your-own concept and there are sufficient items on the menu to cater to those who rather not work for their meal. Slappy Cakes in Plaza Singapura is a convenient location if you want to bring children to an engaging eatery during the school holidays or the weekends. They can have fun making pancakes and decorating them without messing up your kitchen.

I quite enjoyed making my own pancakes at Slappy Cakes though I soon realised I should not quit my day job for MasterChef Singapore.
