Bakery Brera is a friendly neighbourhood bakery next to the Empress Market along Farrer Road. Today we will show you some of the freshly baked artisan breads and pastries that are in the shop and also the items that followed us home.
It has been a long time since we visited the Empress Market along Farrer Road. The last time we were there was when d’Leedon was still Farrer Court. Our most recent encounter with this market may possibly be when we ordered food delivery from Soh Food Stewed Duck stall at the Empress Food Centre in 2021. The area looks much nicer than what I remember it to be. It even has a snazzy sign with the name of Empress Mall.
According to its website, Bakery Brera offers freshly baked artisan breads (sourdough, preferment, wholemeal, etc.) made with fine flours from France and Japan. It also serves a delectable range of pastries, tarts and cakes made only with the finest ingredients. The amount and range of products that comes out of this small shop is amazing. It is very popular bakery, both with online customers and physical walk-ins like us. We were there at lunch time and the display shelves were almost emptied. Do note that they open early – 7.30 am everyday.
A Look Into The Shelves of Bakery Brera
Here is a slideshow of some of the items on display on the shelves of Bakery Brera. They range from large loafs of bread to small delicate cruffins which were almost sold out. Only two pieces of the Ferrero Rocher Cruffin were left. We bought one of them. You can see the prices of their items on the Bakery Brera Online Shop.
What We Bought
This is a view of our platter of freshly baked pastries – clockwise starting from the Ferrero Rocher cruffin, almond croissant, kouign-amann and regular croissant. What is kouign-amann? According to Wikipedia, it is a sweet Breton cake, made with laminated dough. Apparently the name comes from the Breton language words for cake (kouign) and butter (amann).
This how they look on a plate at home. Every item was good – you can almost feel the quality of the ingredients they use. The only ‘problem’ was that they were very light, especially the croissants. You need to buy a lot of them to feed very hungry people. Our favourite items were the kouignamann for its buttery taste and the Ferrero Rocher cruffin for its rich chocolate filling. The Bakery Brera prices are not cheap – this small selection costs around $20. But we think it is one of the best bakeries we have tried in recent times.
