Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice Takashimaya hits the right spot as a comfortable restaurant serving boneless Hainanese chicken rice in a prime location at Orchard Road Singapore. More expensive than their chicken rice stall in Tiong Bahru market but more affordable than the legendary Chatterbox, this quite new restaurant also serves more than just chicken rice.

From Lengkok Bahru and Tiong Bahru to Orchard Road
Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice is now a chicken rice restaurant chain that has eight outlets in Singapore. According to its website, it all began in 1987 at Lengkok Bahru. Subsequently the two brothers who had a shared love for chicken rice set up a stall at the bustling Tiong Bahru Market. The new Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice Takashimaya restaurant is their flagship store. Other outlets can be found in various parts of Singapore, including Clementi, Yishun and Tampines.

The new chicken rice restaurant at Takashimaya is located on the Basement 2 level, next to the event hall. It is a nicely appointed place with a hint of retro in its design. Other than Chatterbox, we can’t think of a more attractive restaurant which is known for their chicken rice.

Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice Takashimaya Menu
Here are pictures of some pages of the Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice Takashimaya menu. In addition to the usual chicken rice dishes, there is a more premium French chicken served with Japanese rice that costs $60. Other interesting local dishes like curry laksa, ngoh hiang, sweet and sour pork and curry fish make this look like a zi char restaurant in Orchard Road.

Special Menus

There were also a couple of special menus available at the time of our visit. A National Day menu to celebrate the 61st year of Singapore’s independence and a weekday Signature Chicken Rice combo at $9.90 each (with minimum spend condition). On this visit we decided to try the Signature Chicken Rice combo and a few items from the a la carte menu.

Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice Weekday Signature Chicken Rice Combo
The $9.90 Signature set consists of chicken rice, soup, signature sauces and a choice of Hainanese chicken or roasted chicken. We chose the latter as we had only recently tried boneless Hainanese chicken at their Tiong Bahru market outlet. The usual price of this is $14++, so it is natural to order the weekday combo if the minimum spend of $15 per diner can be met. As we had expected, the chicken and the rice were very good, enhanced by the three types of sauces provided – dark soy sauce, chilli sauce and ground garlic.

Mee Goreng and Fried Kai Lan
To meet the minimum spend as well as to satisfy our curiosity, we also ordered the Malay style egg noodles (mee goreng, $16++) and wok-fried kailan with flat fish ($15++).

Both the mee goreng and kai lan were very good. The mee goreng in particular was similar to what we would expect from such a dish at a coffee house of a local hotel. The noodles had a good texture and the dish contained a fair number of prawns and pieces of fish and squid that were of good quality.

The fried kailan was similar to what we would expect from a good zi char restaurant. To have these kinds of food available in a nice restaurant setting in Orchard Road provides us with another dining option in the posh shopping street of one of the most expensive cities in the world.
