Andong Zzimdak in Raffles City (Closed)

Andong Zzimdak-2

Andong Zzimdak is the latest new Korean restaurant to open in Singapore. It serves Andong jjimdak, a type of braised chicken dish.  It just opened in October 2015 in Raffles City and is apparently a franchise from a South Korean restaurant based in Seoul. “Andong” is the name of the town where the dish originated and “jjimdak” means boiled or braised chicken. The restaurant is at basement one of Raffles City.

Like many Korean restaurants, Andong Zzimdak at Raffles City is very neatly and efficiently laid out. The furniture and cutlery are lined up and displayed with almost military like precision. The menu is straightforward – just four  types of jjimdak and some side dishes to choose from.

For first time visitors like us, the hard decision would be deciding whether to order the medium or large versions of jjimdak.  We selected a large Andong jjimdak ($55.90) and two side dishes – chicken karaage ($9) and mini seafood pancake ($9).  The large dish was really big. It is enough to feed four people without any other dishes.

The giant dish of Andong Jjimdak was about 45 cm in diameter. It contained pieces of chicken, carrots and potatoes resting on a bed of sweet potato noodles. The taste of the dish was familiar, very close to the dark soy sauce braised chicken that we prepare at home. The difference was a slight sweetness and spiciness. The sweet potato noodles were like tang hoon or glass noodles, but fatter (like linguine) and more chewy. All the ingredients had been cooked together and absorbed the taste of the sauce.  Overall, a hearty dish that could satisfy up to four people.

The total combination of the jjimdak with the side dishes and the complimentary kimchi and pickles meant that we had over-ordered. Never order on an empty stomach.

The mini seafood pancakes were a bit like Thai fish cakes. Chewy in texture with a mild seafood taste. Very nice and recommended.

Korean restaurants usually serve great fried chicken and Andong Zzimdak was no exception. The chicken karaage was good.  With the benefit of hindsight the ideal combination for four would be a medium size jjimdak and the two side dishes.  It was a satisfying Korean meal in this new restaurant.
