Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake and Popiah

Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake at East Coast Lagoon Food Village

The East Coast Lagoon Food Village is a unique seaside hawker centre with many popular food stalls. Our favourite stall for a snack or light meal is Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake, which is also known for its Popiah.

East Coast Lagoon Food Village

First opened in 1978, East Coast Lagoon Food Village is designed to blend in with its environment and to have a resort feel. It has gone through several major facelifts and revamps but the hawker centre with Balinese-style architecture and eating areas arranged in a series of courtyards is still a unique food centre with rustic charm.

At East Coast Lagoon Food Village, you can enjoy good affordable food among frangipani and palm trees with a view of the sea and the lagoon. Its special location by the beach and laid back atmosphere also means that people in running gear or swimming costumes can walk in and have a good meal.

Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake

There are many popular food stalls in East Coast Lagoon Food Village – satay, duck rice, bbq chicken, seafood and more. When we want something light, our favourite stall is Lagoon Carrot Cake (人工湖罗卜糕), which has recently changed its signboard to call itself Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake (人工湖驰名罗卜糕). Notwithstanding its name, it is also famous for its award-winning popiah.

Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake, Stall No. 40

Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake (人工湖驰名罗卜糕) sells only carrot cake and popiah. However, there is a choice of white carrot cake or black carrot cake and, for those who want both, the black and white carrot cake.

The price of the Carrot Cake ranges from $4 to $8. The Popiah costs $2.20 per roll ($4.20 for 2 rolls and $6 for 3 rolls).

The carrot cake, or radish cake, has very good texture – soft and spongy. The white version has a crispy exterior. The black version is fried with a generous amount of sweet dark soya sauce with prawns added. It has a complex mix of flavours and is simply delicious. The bits of chye poh (preserved turnip) add to the enjoyment of the dish.

Popiah

Lagoon Po Piah East Coast Lagoon Food Village

Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake’s popiah has won the title of “Best of the Best” popiah in City Hawker Food Hunt. The popiah roll comes in a generous size. The filling comprises many ingredients, including pieces of turnips, eggs, fresh bean sprouts and dried shrimp. The popiah is juicy but not too wet. Some crispy bits and the crunchy fresh bean sprouts add to the good combination of textures. We do not think it is the “Best of the Best Popiah” but the Lagoon’s popiah is certainly a very good version.

Be aware that a large amount of garlic is used in both the carrot cake and popiah. So if you are planning a romantic evening in East Coast Park, you may want to give Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake a miss. Otherwise, we think Lagoon Famous Carrot Cake will be a nice pit stop for cyclists, a good place for a snack after a swim or jog or for a light meal with a view anytime of the day.
