Foong Kee Coffee Shop – one of the best wanton mee in Singapore

Foong Kee Coffee Shop at Keong Saik Road is one of the several local food establishments that hold their own against more upmarket and Michelin-starred neighbours in this part of Chinatown Singapore. Their reputation of being a place for the best wanton mee in Singapore means that it is best to visit at an offpeak time of the day.

Foong Kee Coffee Shop looks like a typical coffee shop in Singapore. If you are lucky, you can get a parking lot right in front of it. If no street side lots are available, there is the nearby multi-storey carpark at Craig’s Place, a 10 minute walk away.

The front of Foong Kee Coffee Shop is plastered with all culinary rewards. I noticed that the level of cleanliness and neatness is higher than the usual coffee shop in Singapore. For example, the tables are clean without any trace of griminess. Even their chilli sauce dishes are stacked with military precision. There are some tables indoors but for the best coffee shop dining experience, the best seats are those along the pavement or five-foot way.

Char Siew Rice

We decided to try the char siew rice (picture above) and the wanton noodles (which comes with a small bowl of wanton soup) and a large bowl of wanton. The total price of all these was $10. I am not sure about the breakdown – perhaps $3, $4 and $3 respectively. Whatever it was, it was more than enough food for two persons. A value for money restaurant in the most expensive city in the world!

We had mixed feelings about the char siew rice. The taste and flavour of the char siew was good – the charred bits and the sweetness of the sauce were very good. But the pork had a large proportion of chewy bits – which meant a fair bit of it was wasted.

Wanton Noodles

The wanton noodles and the wanton soup itself were the better choices that day. The noodles were light but bouncy and has a nice taste that brings back nostalgic feelings of noodles from childhood times. The wantons or dumplings were also delightful. Each was small, delicate and lightly flavoured. We were glad we ordered a separate large bowl of it. Otherwise we might have fought over the few pieces that came with the noodles.

Wanton or Wonton

Overall, we think that the wanton mee at Foong Kee Coffee Shop certainly are one of the best in Singapore. It was also a nice coffee shop experience – to be able to dine in the fashionable dining area of Keong Saik dressed in the most unfashionable free event T-shirts and sandals.
